Okay, download ccleaner and defraggler number one. Run defraggler once a month to clean up your hard drive. Ccleaner will clean up all the crappy files hidden on your computer. Run CCleaner once every 2 weeks.Clean up the registry with it also. Uninstall all programs that your not using. Get a free anti-virus like microsoft security essentials or avast and run a scan regularly. Go to the run command type in 'msconfig' and choose a selective startup. This will speed boot up times and the laptop in general because there won't be as many programs running when you startup the laptop.

From a hardware point of view, all you can really do is keep everything dust free( especially the fan) and re-apply cpu thermal paste once a year.
