    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some information about the facilities and general state of Tallaght IT. I'm thinking of applying for a course pretty soon here and was wondering if anyone could give me an honest appraisal of the college itself.
What are the facilities like, what is the library like, are the computers up to date in the labs, etc.

Any information at all would be great.

    Thanks a million.

It all depends on your course. I studied Computing and have by and large found the lab equipment to be excellent. The Computing labs tend to get the best Computers though. The library has been fine. There is a good selection of books and you can generally find somewhere to sit and study if required.

The car park was always a bit of an issue when I was there but it looks as though the amount of spaces have been increased with the recent development work.

    That's great information, thanks.

I'm looking to apply for a computing course, so its good to hear that the computers are up to scratch.

As a matter of interest, how long ago were you in Tallaght IT? Was it recent?

I'm there now but not doing computing. Any I've used run on XP. They take an age to load the first time, but once you've logged in to it once, it's much quicker thereafter.

Parking is an issue but there is..... something, not sure what, being built as we speak. I assume its more parking as everyone complains about it unless you're willing to go in early.

I havent used the library much, but it seems to be reasonably well stocked. The only problem is it can get a little noisy for a library and during the winter it was fcuking freezing.

Tones of clubs and societies and whatnot if you're into that. The SU seem quite good too, they always seem to be organising something for the students.

Your best bet may be to find someone who is doing the course you are looking to apply for. Every area is bound to be different when doing it as opposed to looking at someone else doing it.

All the computing labs are Windows 7 these days, one of the rooms (233) has top of the range new computers with huge screens.

Thanks for that information. I am applying for a new Computers course which is starting soon. So hopefully all goes well.

The networking labs also just got some new computers and they also have real cisco hardware for you to work with.

If you dont like using the library there are usually a few labs empty to work in as well.

If you have any other questions about the course feel free to PM me

Living in Portlaoise, would it not be handier to go to IT Carlow? Very good computing dept there, and looks like its better funded than Tallaght.

The course I want to do is not being run in Carlow, otherwise that would have been my first choice. Tallaght is the closest college to me that's running it.

When I went there, I finished about three years ago now, I always felt the college facilities were excellent. Library is well stocked and fairly big and there's plenty of scope for research. Computers are always around when you need them, outside of exam times or "rush hours", and you'll pretty much find whatever you need - good Internet speeds and the IT Department are always on hand to help you however you need.

All the computers are top of the range for what you'll ever need as part of your course. I did A/V and never had any issues with software or not being able to use computer equipment.

I'm doing engineering at IT Tallaght. I'm in third year now and transferred there after first year. I find everything about the college to be excellent, be it facilities, staff, su, etc...
I'd recommend it, especially as the other IT where I did my first year was a complete joke in comparison, where staff seemed to have a hostile attitude, poor facilities and a massive failure rate.

Although it was your first choice, I honestly wouldn't recommend Carlow IT.

Thats great news to hear. I have an interview tomorrow in the college for the H. Dip in Science in Computers, so will get my first look at the college then.

I'm not really sure what to expect really from the interview. Has anyone here been to an interview like this before? Will it be like a job interview, or is it just a quick chat about whether you would be suitable for the course or not?

Read up on course literature. Make sure you know what the course is about. The interviewer will want to make sure that you are serious about your choice and that you can handle the course content. In other words that you won't end up dropping out early.

Great, thats what I have been doing recently. I've been going through the course information from the college website, so hopefully I should be well prepared.

Thanks again for the info David, I really appreciate it.
