I'm planning a 4 month trip to South America. I'm really struggling to find travel insurance that suits.

I was planing on bringing my slr camera and my iPad but I can't seem to get them covered anywhere. Most insurers will cover personel valuables to a limit of approx €1500, but every one I've looked at has a limitation on individual item value of approx €150.

Many people suggest putting it on house insurance, but that doesnt really work out either to be honest. (due to excess and premium hike)

So, does anyone know a good/reputable travel insurer that covers personal items of values up to say €500 per item?

What have other people done when travelling with iPad/netbook or camera??

Put them on your house insurance and if you have none put them on your folks. You can individually list the items, I've my laptop covered, camera including different lenses, bike, phone, pad etc all covered for full value and it covers me world wide.

Won't cost you a lot to put it on your folks insurance, maybe €30 for the lot.

I have my own house insurance. Rang them there a while ago and was told the following:
Premium would go up (prob not by much though, but still).
The policy has a €250 excess. Therefore claiming for a 350 camera or 500 iPad doesn't seem as sane... Especially if losing no claims bonus on home insurance as well.
The items are only covered for 60 or 90 days while abroad in a year. (wanst sure which, but either way won't cover whole trip)

Check out worldnomads.com. I'm not sure of the specifics but I know a lot of travel bloggers use them and they would have a lot of equipment with them.

They're probably the only option for that type of trip if you have good gear. Very expensive though - €189 for 4 months cover before you add the high value items.

Just to update. I still haven't got my travel insurance. With a week to go I'm just going to have to do without full cover on the high value items.

While worldnomads covers them, it's very expensive and, based on the reviews I've found, not a good company to deal with when trying to make a claim.

    Just to update again.
I had no idea until i started reading policy documents, but the personal possessions cover in Travel insurance policies covers very very little. When I saw one item limit of 200 etc, I assumed this meant any item i possesed to that value. Nope, there is more exclusions than inclusions. Doesn't cover watches / phones / cameras / iPads etc etc.... The list goes on and on. Here's an example:
    Personal Possessions
Luggage, clothing, valuables and personal items which are owned by You and have been either taken or purchased on the trip.
The following are not included in the definition:
Animal skins, antiques, articles made of or containing gold, bicycles, binoculars, bonds, buggies, camcorders, cameras, compact disc players, computer equipment, computer games and computer game consoles, computer or telecommunications equipment of any kind, contact or corneal lenses, coupons, diving equipment, documents of any kind, furs, golf equipment, ipods, jewellery, leather goods, marine and craft equipment, Mini-Disc players mobile phones, money, motor vehicles, MP3 players, musical instruments, photographic equipment, prams, precious or semi-precious stones, radios, sailboards or related equipment or fittings of any kind, securities, silks, silver or other precious metals, spectacles, sports equipment, ski equipment, stamps, surfboards, sunglasses, tape
recorders, telescopes, television sets, travellers cheques, video
equipment or DVD equipment of any kind, watches.

This appears to be the same for all of them. Please let me know if you know of a policy that does actually cover personal possessions.

However. I did find one solution. Blueinsurance have a gadget insurance section which cover any items you identify for a year.... Worldwide.

But now, my reg Tavel insurance (260 due to winter sports and grade 2 hazardous activities) and my gadget insurance (140) adds up to a very expensive €400
Still looking for a cheaper option, but its not looking likely.
