I got a private message telling me to post here first to introduce myself before jumping into other boards/threads, so...

My name is Chris. I am a member of a medieval and renaissance living history group called the Society for Creative Anachronism. We attempt to emulate Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East in the time period from the fall of the Roman Empire through the end of the 16th century.

Part of our play involves adopting personae for our chosen country and time period - we research and attempt to re-create clothing, recreational activities, arts and sciences, etc. commensurate with out persona. Adopting an appropraite name is part of that exercise. Regulation and registration of chosen names is the province of our internal College of Arms of which I am a member. Frequently, we get requests from club members for names based on translation or aesthetic pronunciation. Gaelic names are among the most popular, and often times one of the more difficult to document historically.

I found this site after an extensive search for one Irish Gaelic name in particular, and believe that spending some time here will be of great benefit to my onomastic research. I look forward to being here.
