Car won't go into 2nd,4th or Reverse

Have a 00 Nissan Primera which was working okay until a large clunking noise.
Now the gears simply will not go into 2nd,4th or Reverse, either whilst stopped or driving.
Brought it into FirstStop and they've advised it needs a new gearbox, new clutchkit... not worth the hassle sorta thing.
Others say it could be something more simple, i.e. a gearbox selector problem
I may get a 2nd opinion... anyone any ideas or seen this before?

The large clunk might be a clue?

The clutch or 'box, or perhaps the linkage are borked.

That happened on an old car of mine, turned out to be gear linkage. Was just welded back into place to fix it.

Was your car making a wining noise before this at any stage? I know the bearings in these can cause internal damage. But I'd check the linkages first seen as you describe a 'large clunking noise'. Does the gear lever feel funny or anything?

When you "drive" it now, the gearstick thumps backwards when in gear and you put your foot down on the throttle...
think i'll deffo get a 2nd set of eyes on her.

I would doubt its the box given the symptoms. 2nd and 4th are usually on different shafts and reverse is a idler gear working on 1st.

Selector/linkage would be the more logical fault.

I had the exact same issue twice with my last car (Opel corsa) and thankfully it was just the gear linkage and not the gearbox. It's an absolute nightmare when it happens as even trying to take off after a stop will take ages. In the corsa though, it was due to plastic linkages being used so I'm not sure about nissan.
