Work Query

    Hi All,

First time poster, long time lurker!

I have a question in relation to my job:

I work for a family company the father is the owner & pays the wages; however the daughter has her own 'sister' company & I am sometimes instructed to work for her. This leaves me with a backlog of work which I was meant to do for the fathers company.

Is it legal for them to make me work for to separate companies?

    Many Thanks for your help.

Does your job description say "other duties as required"?

    Do you even have one?

    Hi JustMary,

The daughters company started up a year after I signed my contract; so it's not listed in list of duties in the contract.

    Also,
She gets me to do 80% of her work for her company & I no what she charges an hour & a recent job she made over 8,000euro & I did the majority of the work.
Then I have to do the work for her father & it just piles up on me.

Am I entitled to any extra pay?

    Thanks,

Do you have the option of saying no? If you said I'm sorry but I have a backlog what would happen?

Are you working extra unpaid hours as a result?

If yes I would be demanding not asking for extra pay.

The problem now is a lot of employers are basically riding employees due to the state of the economy.

I realise things are tough but maybe start looking around for something else.

Employees are rarely entitled to extra pay if they have to do extra work, "act up" to cover a senior person who is absent, or even a permanent promotion. "Demanding" extra pay as suggested above will rarely help the situation. Even if you did get extra money, would you want that workload to continue on a regular basis?

What has the father said? He's the boss, and it's the work you're doing for him that's suffering, so it's in his interest to sort it out.

Its an employees right to know what their job is and what is expected of them.

You need to sit down with your boss and work out how much time you should devote to each. To see a balance. The last thing you want is for your perforamnce to slip because you are spread to thinnly and both of them getting unhappy with you.

Speak up. The sooner you do the better. If you continue as is it will just become the norm and if you complain then it will be "S/he was capable of doing it before and now s/he's just dragging her/his feet."

Thank you for you above replies,

The boss's daughter can't do anything wrong in her father's eyes what she says is basically the law.

I have been given out too by both for not having work done & I explain do them time after time why I haven't it done.

We think (my colleagues & I) that they are trying to make us work late (with out pay, we don't get overtime).

We finish at 6 on regularly one of them will come over to me @ ten to 6 & ask for something to be done before I leave work. I very rarely stay after hours & they don't like it.

I am looking for other jobs; as I really hate working here it's just depressing.

Once again Thanks for all you replies.
