Replacement HP Battery

I'm looking for a replacement HP battery i've been told that the official ones are around 100 euro. I done a search on ebay and found a few that cost around 30 quid from the UK. Are they any use?

Hi James. The cheaper batteries won't be as good. Also be suspicious of any ads on ebay proclaiming that their batteries are genuine.

I myself use cheaper batteries - I'm on my 3rd battery now for my 4 yr. old Dell Inspiron. I couldn't justify spending 150€ on a genuine battery when my laptop probably isn't worth that any longer.

I bought the 1st replacement on ebay for around 30€ and it worked perfectly for 10 months but degraded rapidly after that. I had to replace it after 11 mts.

I bought my 2nd replacement on amazon.co.uk and it's still working well but I only bought it 7 - 8 mts. ago. It doesn't last as long as it did when I first bought it, but it still lasts for 1.5 hrs.

Positive reviews of batteries on ebay or amazon aren't very useful, as the reviews are normally done when the battery is fairly new and working well. Reviews of batteries would be much better if they were done after 1 year.

If you google 'Genuine OEM Battery' which is the term that the ebay seller has used, you will see loads of links to sites describing that in most cases the battery works but is not genuine.

Assuming that the battery works fine, you will only spot the difference after 6 - 10 months. Genuine batteries will work for a lot longer but the fake ones will degrade during this time. Because ebay asks people to rate the seller much earlier than 6 months, most counterfeit batteries will get positive feedback.

The seller you have linked to has a satisfaction rate of 99.5%. If you look at the negative comments for this seller, there are a couple of comments where buyers have stated that they are not genuine but refurbished batteries. I would stay away from this one. Personally, I only purchase from sellers with a rating greater than 99.8%. The method used by a lot of dodgy people to refurbish a laptop battery is to connect it to an electric welder and run a strong current through it. Aside from being highly dangerous, the 'refurbished' battery will only last a couple of months.

Always assume that the batteries are counterfeit. That then poses an interesting question - are you better off buying from a seller who does not claim that the replacement is a genuine HP part. At least you know that because they are not lying about that, there is a better chance that their other claims about the product are genuine. Always check the negative feedback for the seller to get a better idea of them and the products they sell.
