    Looks a bit choppy here

Although runs quite smooth in this one. I'd say you'd need AA turned off in most new games to get the framerate up using that GPU.

Yes for strategy games a GT540m would do fine, more important would be the CPU, it should be an i5 to suit your needs.

would an i7 not be better than the i5?

core i5 vs core i7 probably won't make a significant difference in gaming,
however, you will need to take consideration with your overall budget. mid-range cpu + higher end video card probably faster than highend cpu + mid range video card IMHO.

Of course, but not enough to justify the price for your proposes. i7 is only for real hardcore gaming.

It's probably worth the risk but you could end up deep down in shit creak if it's a dud when you get it buying it that way. They have no depot in Ireland (so says google) so it'd have to go back to the UK and your savings would be well gone then.

And you'd look like this--> for weeks getting it sorted.

Using Metro and BF3 are misleading examples. Yes they are the most demanding titles out there (or among them) but for most games on the market these few examples are either poorly optimized or just far ahead graphically of the regular flock. Even most desktop rigs have issues running the titles at full tilt. Plenty fine though if you dial these back to medium or high settings from full on ultragasm: the games still look good whichever way.

True, but using such examples gives a better idea of what the laptop will be like in 5 years time. No point it something that will run BF3 on low, other titles on decent settings, only for it to be obsolete more quickly.

Anyway, buying a laptop for gaming is generally considered a bad idea, as you sacrifice performance for portability.
