I would like a list of channels available on MMDS in cavan, both analogue and digital. I am considering getting it installed. I dont need channel numbers, but id like to know whether the analogue uses an stb or the tvs built in tuner. If it is the tvs tuner, could you tell me if its band i, band iii, hyperband or uhf.

    Thanks

PS i think it is the same mmds in monaghan and navan, not sure though.

Analogue uses a STB too (as it's encrypted). That is, if it's even still available!

You'd be better off with Free Satellite using "Freesat HD" and an Aerial for Saorview, or at Worst Sky. MMDS is very limited and will be likely to be closing by 2014.

    www.saortv.ie

There are either only 10 or 11 analogue channels or none depending on area. Most are encrypted. More than 95% of what is watched on MMDS is free via Aerial or Satellite.

    Free on Aerial
RTE1, RTE2 (part time HD), ala, TV3, TG4, 3E, RTEjr/RTE+1, RTE news now and various radio (All Digital and WS, Analogue closes 24th October 2012)

Strabane and Divis UK Digital TV via aerial dramatically increases in power after 24th Oct 2012, when N.I. Analogue closes. You might get it in Cavan.

    Free on Dish
All the BBC & ITV, C4, C5, about 25 decent channels out of over 200 free and about a dozen decent radio out of about 70 free.

You really only "need" Sky or MMDS for Sky Sports.

Almost certainly would be past tense now. I know analogue MMDS in Cork area (ex-Chorus) was switched off a few years ago. It had at one time been 12 channels max, but was gradually reduced with the pay-extra channels the first to go.

Yes that is correct but I cannot use satellite due to a very tall building (a cathedral) blocking my line of sight to the satellite. Believe me I have tried. Definitely no freeview where I am, can barely get analogue. MMDS as much as I dislike it is my only option

this is the building concerned (you're in Cavan)

It's possible some extremity of your property actually has LOS (one corner of garden perhaps) have all options been tried? Many installers won't bother if its not straightforward.
Or would a neighbouring property be willing to host a dish for you?!

The Satellite needed is at elevation of 22.5 degree roughly and in S.E. Direction. You'd have to be VERY close to that for a Roof mounted dish to not work. Maybe the Installer wasn't competent.

Fold a square of paper in half twice to see the elevation angle.
If any part of your property has sunlight about 11am you can get the signal.

Nowhere has sunlight at 11 though

all mmds has been digital for a few years now, however Cavan is in the 'Chorus' area so there is no DVR available, but there is about 93 channels on the line up. all the obvious one as well as Movies, Sport, (Sky, ESPN, Setanta) if you want to pay for them, and multiple set top boxes are easily installed ...uses the small grey sagem decoders, cheap and simple but they work reliably as long as the mesh has line of sight, installers will not install it if signal level and quality doesnt conform to minimum standards

What channels are they, could you list them?
Do they charge you if they come out but the signal isnt strong enough?

    http://www.upc.ie/television/digitalmaxplus/
Link to the appropiate page on UPC website, i have no idea regards coverage in that area, however often sales are processed on the basis that if there is no or poor signal that then will be the end of the matter, usually the installers or there office will know exactely where services are available and where not, the service will not be installed where it wont work properly.

I'm from Cavan and never EVER saw an installation nor even an advert for MMDS locally.

I was always of the belief and presumption that it never came because the extreme hillyness of terain in Cavan made it impossible (every other house is in the shadow of a hill) along with the fact that the main benefit of MMDS way down south nowhere near the border was the ability to get something more than RTE1+2 which in Cavan you achieved since the 60s for no subscription cost by putting up an aerial pointing north to get the BBCs + UTV Channel 4.

Anyhow, my folks with an aerial pointing north to Brougher have 30+ uk digital channels ( see here for the full list) along with the RTE+TV3 offerings off the south facing aerial.
All for no subscription and no need for a satelite needing a line of sight to the south.
