My 2.0 Pinto seems to run badly and cut out randomly when warm (backfiring and generally acting like the timing is out). It seems to be intermittent from what I can see, but last time I ventured too far from home I needed to be towed so I'm not too brave to find out.

I fitted a new coil, which I thought sorted it, but didn't.

It is fitted with a Sparkrite sx2000 electronic ignition, and I think that is the culprit. Two questions 1) does anyone have other suggestions, 2) What is the best thing to replace it with?

Also one of the front calipers is binding. Is a rebuild kit from Bigg red the best solution. What is the best way to get out the pistons?

A quick way of doing it is disconnect it from its mounting (leave the brake hose connected) and pump the brakes a few times - you might need a helper, small timber block, and a g-clamp to get the pistons to come out at the same rate. Its worked for me in the past, just make sure you dont let the brake fluid resevoir run empty.

I had the Pertronix 111 on my Mustang,it was a disaster,so I took it out and put the points back in,runs great now.
I think they are just too small.
This is what I plan on getting next

I'd have a look at lumenition ignition. I fitted one of their Optronic systems, with a Bosch coil and Magnecor ignition leads and I've never had any spark problems.

As for the brake calipers. I found my local (classic friendly) motor factors had M16 Calipers available on an exchange basis for approx €75. I thought it was a tad easier than rebuilding a caliper as I've never done it.

If the Carb has an automatic choke its worth checking it is not stuck on.

Mark 3 cortinas running pintos were notorious for this. Gives very lumpy, stuttery driving...
