My brother is considering buying a 01 toyota yaris. There is some kind of rattle from the engine and the dealer said its to do with the 'timing chain' and that there's 'no problem' and that its common enough with yaris's of this age. He is also giving a six month guarantee on the car. Myself and the brother know absolutely nothing about cars so is this an issue to be concerned with? Would he better off passing on this car?

Could also be the water pump. I wouldn't be buying one with a rattly chain. Plenty of them out there.

Whatever it is would want to be fixed before your brother gives any money.

    I'd walk away.

To quote mad max "just walk away and there'll be an end to the horror"

Plenty of cars out there that don't rattle, you're the buyer, you have the power

The fact the dealer knows there is a problem, hasn't bothered fixing it and tries to play it down as nothing speaks volumes. Walk away..don't look back!

As for the guarantee, can you trust it if not from a main dealer? I only say because I went to view a car at Palmerstown motors, was told the car comes with a warranty and yet they closed down a few days later.

The dealer knew he was closing down/going bust!

    Thank f@@k I didn't buy that car!

this yr/model is well known for this problem

i personnally replaced 4/5 engines during my time with toyota

chains go slack, jump teeth, valves go bye-bye

i had a pic on an old mobile of what looks like a a mushroom growing out of the top of a yaris piston but its actually the snapped valve embeded in it:eek:

    stay away from that car
