Peugeot 406 HDI (02) Clutch issue

    Hi,

I have a 02 406 HDI. Today I've had trouble getting the car into gear. The clutch still works, but even with the clutch pedal to the floor it's still biting the gears. Its almost impossible to get it into first gear now when the car is running.

Is there an adjustment on it that I can maneuver or am I missing something that would be the cause of the problem?

    Thanks

AFAIR Its a hydraulic clutch in your car. Have you checked the fluid level in the clutch reservoir? There isn't any adjustment on a hydraulic clutch.

Do you find that the pedal doesn't push against your foot all the way back up after depressing it? If so, it may be either the slave or master cylinder leaking fluid. If it's the slave cylinder, it'll be losing fluid out on the ground. The master cylinder will leak fluid back into the reservoir. Either leaking would have the effect of the car being possible to put into first gear nearly as normal but after a couple of seconds the car would creep of as though u were slowly letting the clutch out.

If it's not the hydraulic system causing you trouble, then it looks like you will be needing a new clutch.

The release bearings have a habit of coming apart on these giving similar symptoms. The guide that the bearing slides on brakes off and makes a bit of a mess.

Hydraulic clutch, fed by the brake fluid reservoir. I've bled the clutch at the slave cylinder (replaced recently) and its done the job. In fact the clutch doesn't bite until about 1/3rd to 1/2 way out compared to almost immediately before.

I'm wondering if its some air from when the slave cylinder was replaced, or if the master cylinder is leaking itself. Not sure though. The clutch only deteriorated to almost unusable in the space of an hours driving.

When I went to bleed the clutch, the pedal wasn't out fully, but once I pushed it in to pump it it came out the whole way and has done since.
