Depends on the damage done, water isn't a lubricant for engine so if ran for 10 mins it may well be fecked.

how much water was put in it,if it was only a small drop, drain it and put in new oil,if there telling you that you need a new engine, you must have had it filled to the brim, how did you get water in there anyway?

Any horrible sounds from the engine, less power, weird smoke/steam etc? Depends on the amount of water too. If the oil hit 100C for long the steam from the water might overpressurise seals and gaskets.

...assuming there was oil in the engine.

Indeed, apart from the lubrication side of thing, if someone was to lash a load of water in there then various seals could be damaged from excess pressure?
Tis a wonder it ran for 10 minutes at all, I presume someone doing that would top up until they could see water below the oil cap?

........ that's what happened the only time I've heard it done.

wasnt me that did it,it was filled to the top and, driven for about 1o mins and then it stopped.just checking that the garage isnt talking sh1t.i suppose its the same theory for all engines?silly mistake

Drain it, change the filter, flush, new filter and refill with fresh oil.
See how it goes, it'll only cost you the price of the above (€50/€60) to find out.

Yup, have heard of people doing it. Not as common as mis-fueling a car but it does happen!

Might have hydrolocked, so change oil, remove the spark plugs and turn it over, then replace plugs and try to start it. If it doesnt its probably gone.

Depends how much water was put in. If only a small bit was put in you might be ok but seen as your mechanic says it needs a new engine..
Was it making a tappet knocking sound?

Ah Jaysus:eek:, who the feck did that???.Is the engine still running? If it is, all you can hope for is to drain and refill with the proper oil.It beggars belief how someone can 1,put it in the wrong place and 2, drive for so long:confused::confused::confused:.

How could it have hydro locked? That can only happen if there is water in the cylinders.

I struggle to get my head around someone doing something like this by accident.
I mean if you open the bonnet and haven't a clue what your looking at...why would you just pick a random orifice to pour water into?

If the engine stopped without it being turned off at the ignition, then it may well be gone I'm afraid. What make and model is it? Did this just happen today?

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

With water practically every where outside of the cyclinders, would pressure drive it through the PCV, into the intake and then into the cyclinders?

I wouldn't have thought an engine would even run if it was full of water - how could the crank and conrods move at any speed?

That was my first thought, a kind of inverse hydrolock!

It do happen I remember reading somewhere before where someone put the power washer nozzle in to the rocker cover to remove the gunk inside it..

Well, as you say it, yes that could well be possible alright but I couldn't imagine the engine lasting long enough for it to get that far.

If it were me, I would drain the oil and put new oil in, then just drive the thing as you normally do until (a) the engine fails or (b) it starts making lots of noise.

You might have got away with it, depending on the ratio of oil:water and how long the car was run in that condition.

No sense looking at new engines, expensive work, etc, if the existing engine still has some life left in it.
