How often do you get your windscreen cracked?

It's the third year in a row, where I claim from my insurance windscreen cover in February.
I had a claim in Feb 2010, when I got my windscreen cracked on gravel road in Slovakia after being hit by a stone.
I had a claim in Feb 2011, when my windscreen cracked on M4 after being hit by a stone.
And just today I had my windscreen hit by a stone on rural country road in Mayo and it's cracked.

All those on different cars, but the same insurance policy.

There isn't any limit of number of windscreen claims I'm allowed to make. I don't loose NCB because of them, and there isn't any excess. However I'm wondering if they won't start to be a bit suspicious, as it's always in February every year.

How often do you guys claim for a cracked windscreen?
Is once a year not bit too often?

Never had one crack on me yet, 3 different cars...

Never, in 12 years driving. I've only had the odd tiny little nick (not even big enough to call a "chip").

    Never had one...

As a matter of interest, would fail your NCT on a tiny crack?

Never on my own car ... a huge crack from under the mirror on a rental Golf V... funnily enough Enterprise didn't notice when I returned the car :)

Size and location matters I think, i.e is it obstructing your view

They probably had free windscreen cover as part of insurance anyway no?

    Yea, never happened to me.

    It looks like I am.

However assuming most people who posted here they never had their windscreen cracked, do pay windscreen cover insurance, surely insurance companies make a good bit of money on this anyway.
They won't make it on me though ;)

I'm not getting at you, but are you driving a bit too fast for country roads/too close to the cars in front on main roads?

In 20+ years of driving, I've never cracked a windscreen, you may be just unfortunate.

I only took the extra insurance once in 50+ times renting with them.

I'm driving very fast on country roads, but only when they are empty.
Today when I got hit by a stone, I was doing about 70km/h on 80km/h limit and there was nothing in front of me. It must have been a stone from an oncoming car.

Last year on the M4 motorway, I was doing 120km/h and overtaking other vehicle, while I got hit by a stone shot out from under his wheels.

In Slovakia 2 years ago, I can't remember really, but probably it must have been a stone from oncoming car as well.

I never ever tailgate anyone ;)

I started driving in 1999, and since then up to 2010 I've done nearly half a million km's and never had my windscreen cracked. Unfortunately since then every year I got one cracked. :(

It's automatically included in mine. I wouldn't get a discount for not having it.

    Ahh.
In my insurance I had to choose it as an extra option for something like €13 per year.
For the last 3 years it was definitely worth the price ;)

23 years driving (inc.driving 80k miles a year for 13 of those years)and it happened twice to me. Once when a pheasant flew into my windscreen while I was travelling...er...at speed:eek:. Second time I was changing the wiper blades on my car and the wiper arm slipped out of my hand and snapped against the screen.:o

1 cracked windscreen in just under 13 years of diving. Even then it was in my van and I cracked it from the inside when I had a length of countertop in it slid right up to the base of the window and I hit a bump. I claimed for that on the same claim as my front fly window that some scumbag smashed to have a root so counts as 1 :-)

Clearly, February is not your best month to be out and about.

Maybe you could hibernate for the month of February!!;)

I usually claim for a windscreen every other year as I do a lot of driving and windows get pockmarked over time making the windscreen look pretty bad as you are driving into the sun/bright light etc.

I just ring up my local windscreen place, have everything off the car ready for them to change the windscreen, and get them come and put a new screen in and send the bill to Axa. Done it around 10 times now and never have a problem.

My uncle had a windscreen changed on his Transit once and as he was leaving the fitters a truck with gravel drove by and a cluster of stones fell off and smashed the screen on him!

One chip through the insurance. That's it for me.

Having seen the results of a few windscreen changes on various cars (couple o fuk ones too so not confined to Ireland) I wouldnt be rushing to have mine changed unless absolutely necessary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,780 ✭✭✭sentient_6

Had my drivers side window done. I was going to say changed but there was nothing really left to change after what i presume was a stone from a car coming the other direction smashed it into a million bits while i was tipping along. Such a fright. :o

I never been 100% happy with the fix since either, i reckon the glass a fraction off level & im getting more road noise since. Can't say id be confident changing glass in the car just for the sake for it, ala no1beemerfan.

The crowd I use are excellent and they know I want it done right and so far I've never had a problem.....just clean, clear new glass.

Have my car 4 years now and still haven't had a crack (touch wood)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

Got a bad crack once from an on-coming truck, i was so pissed off i wanted to chase after the truck and give out to the driver....obviously it wasn't his/her fault, but sometimes you just need someone to blame:D.
Didn't have window screen cover on my policy but it was up for renewal a few weeks after so just waited a few weeks into my new policy (with cover) and claimed off them.

Once in almost 20 years of car ownership. Flying stone from the back wheel of a lorry in the windscreen of a week old car!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

The title of this thread made me laugh.

"Ah, about twice a month, I have a guy come round to do it, does a good job an' all". :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭Stoolbend

About 8 windscreens in 11 years for me.
Three in 2005 and two of them were actually in the space of a fortnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,488 ✭✭✭Ryath

None in seven years in driving cars though I've twice had birds hit the windscreen. Drive a lot a night and have had more than my fair share of road kill though it's worse just at sunrise when the birds really are very dozy and slow at getting of the road. That probably applies to both the feathered variety and featherless drunken ones.
Once got hit in the shin by a fist sized stone thrown up by an oncoming car when I was on the motorbike doing 100 kph. Lucky I was wearing armoured boots and leathers still hurt like fvck and left a bruise probably would have broken a bone with out the armour.

In my first car, I had 2 windscreens broken in under a year. The first one was due to vandalism (Bulmers bottle thrown at it in town one night ) and the second one was a stone that was thrown from in between the rear wheels of a lorry in front of me a few months later.

In my second car, I had 2 more due to small stones thrown up by cars coming the opposite direction in the space of 3 years. That would total 4 windscreens in 6 years at that stage

I have my third (and current) car almost 5 years now and so far so good :). Just as well too as a heated one would be a bloody expensive one to replace, for my insurance company anyway :D.

I would never take out an insurance policy without paying that little extra for windscreen cover as it is well worth it.
