    Hi all

am playing with the idea of getting a projector in the next while - once I clear my visa card - so in the next two or three months, so no great rush here. Only challenge is in convincing my OH that I don't need to wait until Christmas... :)

    Uses:
    PS3 / Xbox 360 gameplay
    Blu-Ray from PS3

    Projector: BenQ MS513 DLP-projector - HDMI/VGA/Component - 3D
    Screen: OPTOMA Manual Projector Screen 16:9 - 92" (234 cm) - DS-9092PM.G+

But - how do I get sound on my TV, cannot afford a separate sound-system and have heard I can use my TV somehow - have a Samsung Series 8 LED.

While I know the above projector is 3D - it is a PC 3D one and I have no interest in getting the converter box. 3D is not all that important to me if I am honest - would maybe enjoy the gameplay but there are not enough games out there to justify it and the movies don't interest me all that much.

So besides the sound what would the general feeling be on this setup?
Totally new to the world of projectors so really need some good advice on this.

For what you want to use this projector for, I wouldnt go for that one cause its not HD. Also you should go for one with a native 16:9 ratio instead of 4:3.

This projector will take a HD signal but will downscale it to non HD.
You would be disappointed with the quality of the picture from it im afraid.

Check out optoma, epson home theatre projectors instead of business ones.

    Hope this helps ;)

No this definitely helps - been muddling through this and got blinded by the contrast, noise and lumens as well as the inputs. In terms of the aspect & full HD they had not occurred to me.

Will definitely do some more digging and will hone in on the Optoma range. Was politely told thought last night that I "have to wait a while" - bills you know :) Ah well will have fun thoroughly looking at all the options and if I have to wait a while might see about putting a bit more aside if the model warrants it.

    Thanks again.

So looking good for the Optoma HD200X - bit pricier than I had planned, once I factor in screen, cables and maybe a splitter I am well over budget.

Anyway - as per my OH - I now have time to "save" for this - aka - "don't you dare even consider surprising me with that right now"....
In the meantime I am going to lurk on this forum and see what other pieces of kit are out there. Had not really considered LED as I did not know that you could get LED projectors - maybe it is well I have some spare time now.

Only one thing concerns be about the Optoma - the rainbox effect many talk about - my sight is not the best and I am a bit prone to double vision when I get tired - on a normal day am fine though - any suggestions where I might see some DLP projectors up and running to see just how bad this effect can be?

I still intend this to be mainly for movies and some gaming.

Take a look here for some great info on projectors and in particular the hd200x
    Avforums

    Hd200x owners thread

    Kenable

Thats where I got all my information on the most popular projectors. With the screen, im not buying one at all (not for a while anyway). One tip is to paint a wall a matt grey ( or white) colour and it gives you a great screen. ( if the OH fancies a redecorating of course:))
Others have built their own screens from mdf boards and lined it with a frabic and hung it on the wall like a picture frame.

For cables, i use kenable. For instance i needed a 10m hdmi cable and in a electrical store here it would have cost me €50, I got one for €15 from kenable.

With LED you would be paying probably in and around the €1000 mark for a full hd one.
Its a bit like the DLP models today, when they went full hd they used to cost a small fortune, now they are competing with television prices.
You will see that epson, optoma, jvc and panasonic crop up alot on the avforums site. That should say something;)

On the rainbow effect theres not really many places probably zero have any sort of home theater set up so can demo them. Its like someone said if you want to find problems with something you will find them. I was lucky i was able to see a hd200x with a friend and saw a small hint ( almost insignificant) of rainbow when watching some dark scenes in the dark knight. Other movies like i am legend, spiderman, wathching sky sports saw no more of it. ;)

It didnt bother me one bit.
    Wow long post :pac:
Mods if I posted links here that are not allowed, I apologise.

Fantastic - thanks for all that info - saved me ages of searching - some of the sites I have found up to now have been a bit one-sided, so will definitely take my time reviewing the information sent on.

Unfortunately based on where the power and media is in my room painting a wall is not an option - plan to hang the projector over a window that has blinds on it. Have to try to get a solution that is almost invisible - so projector will be "hidden" behind the doors of my Ikea unit unless in use - so for projector viewing we will spin the couch around and hopefully use the TV for sound - that is an exercise for another day though ;)

    Thanks again.
