Last month brought a 99 Civic was concern about a noise when driving, was thinking of wheel bearing or gearbox issue. Took it back to main dealer were purchased did road test and on ramp said no major problems just due to road noise or could be cheap tyres is this normal?

btw, tyres are Ok and no problems going into gears

    What tyres are on it?

Civic is a very light car and probably not well insulated so can carry lots of road noise into the cabin

Trye noise is a pig if they are mismatched. At least on my polo! Are they all the same size?

    Yes same size 175/65

Bridgestones are noisy. Not sure about the rest but they sound like something from China which I would remove and fit a recognised brand

Tyres play a bit part in road noise as does cabin insulation. I would imagine that cabin refinement was probably not a strong suit of a Civic or any other similar class car of that vintage to be honest.

Thanks to all for help at least it's not a major issue so can live with it for now,
I'll just turn up the radio a bit,

Ok I get it now that's why Civic drivers have such load sound systems !!!

When the tyres are due changing just seek out ones that have low road noise.

Only the German's were ahead of the pack when sound insulating cars back in the mid to late 90's. But it should just sound loud rather than odd. As said new tyres will help.
They're a good car though, nice car to drive.

My Uncle and a cousin both had 90's Hondas (94 civic and 96 Accord) and both took out the interiors (seats/carpets) and insulated them a lot better as both couldn't stand the road noise. My sister's 99 celica is brutal too, the carpet is only mm's thick and nothing underneath that.

    But that just adds weight...

I find road noise in pretty much all Jap stuff bar the Lexus is terrible.
had a Avensis there last year while my own was in for a repair - god above I couldn't get over the noise at motorway speeds - I felt like I was trapped inside a biscuit tin ( oh wait, I was ! ;) )

My uncle used newspapers :D !! He bought it new but was going to get rid of it after a few months due to the noise so he said he'd try the newspaper first! Must have worked cause he kept it for another 2 years after.

I'm not sure on my cousin....think he got proper stuff but he got offered money he couldn't refuse for it so it was sold before I got to see what he did!
