Havent seen it posted, its out since the start of the year and there is an Team now supporting it (AAF). Enigma 2. Crossepg plugin/Blackhole patches etc for 7 day EPG.

A little less than the VU+ range and has a hybrid DVB-T/DVB-C tuner as the second tuner. They are being sold with the second tuner for in or around €220 before postage.

    For Linux enthusiasts though.

Gigablue HD 800 se (be careful with name as there is a Solo range - also check when buying that it has the second tuner included).

There are also a few other new linux Combo boxes out there (beside the VU+Duo, Azbox and Qbox ranges) that I have come across, but dont seem to have support as of yet Galaxy Innovations ST 9196 (Russian) and the Sunray4 HD SE (SR4) which is a DVB-T/C/S2 triple tuner with Wifi but is a DM clone, yet cheap...

    In comparison with what ?

The chip in this is the BCM7325 which is a MIPS CPU operating @ 333Mhz. Thats multi threaded with the DMIPS outputing @ >500. It uses a 400MHZ clock.

Broadcom processors come in either 333 OR 400 MHZ these days. The next MIPS chip up (BCM7405), is the engine for the Dreambox DM800SE. The Box above has the same amount of Mib RAM as a Dreambox DM800SE.

Its the same Broadcom chip as used in the VU+ Solo and Kaon K-3202HD boxes.

    Datasheet.

would be nice if it had the 400MHz like the Vu Uno

all about price though.. do you have a link to it for sale?

Has anybody in Ireland purchased one of the Gigablue HD 800SE satelite recievers, if so, can you tell me if you get 7day EPG for the satelite channells and also the terrestrial channels?

Only 1 input each? So can you record from both at the same time whilst watching a 3rd recorded programme?

The front of it looks ugly, I wish someone would make a decent combo-box that had a nice MFD on the front like the Humax boxes, but also had support for the 7 day satellite and terrestrial EPGs and could record well. That's what I'd rather spend a few hundred on.

Thats what I thought too but on closer inspection its €179 without the DVB-T tuner for Saorview.
Its €34.90 extra for that tuner so €213.90 to make it a combo.

Ordered one today from the uk with the latest vix image pre-installed, so should have it up and running by the weekend, I will let you know what I think.

From reading up on it the vix image is supposed to be one of the best around

Yes, Vix is very good, I've had it on my Vu+ Duo. The fact that it can pull in the Freesat EPG directly is a big bonus, never mind all the other features.

Out of curiosity, how much was the shipping? I'm presuming you went with World of Satellite?

I am. VIX 3.0 is a great image. Only problem is it's having trouble with the aspect ratios for the DTT channels - I'm using the box on a 4:3 TV but selecting 'letterbox' still gives me 4:3 (fullscreen) on 16:9 channels. Problem doesn't exist on the satellite channels. Also, this wasn't a problem on a couple of other images I tried.

Yeah, went with world of satellite, shipping was 19 gbp

That's annoying alright, but it's the kind of thing that should be sorted soon.

So in general Vix works well, it's responsive, doesn't hang or crash regularly? Reason I ask is, I had an earlier version (2.4 I think) on the Duo, and it was a bit too buggy to recommend to non-techie friends who just want to watch TV. If this version on the Gigablue is stable, I'd be happy to suggest it over the likes of the Triax and Fergusons.

I have the box now for a couple of days.

The vix image is really good, I am a total noob to linux boxes but I am very happy with it so far. I have a steap learning curve ahead of me.

Box loads faster than my current thompson skyhd box and channel zapping is nice and fast.

The vix epg is nice, 7 day epg on terrestrial and satellite. I am still learning how to put together my channel listings.

@SalteeDog : can you get the dvb-t and dvb s channels all on one list on the epg ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 450 ✭✭SalteeDog

@RURS. I find Vix on Gigablue to be very stable - more so on than on the Vu+ duo. Reason for that is that the inbuilt DVB-T tuner is inherently more stable than the extenal DVB-T USD stick I need to use for the Vu+.

Generally the only crashes I get are when I'm stressing the box by streaming from a remote drive over the network. My Gigablue is connected to a wireless bridge which I made using an old Linksys router running Open WRT.

@dazbaz. Yes all my channels (DVB-T and DVB-S) are mixed up together in a custom favourites bouquet in my EPG. Use dreamboxedit to set it up.

Thanks SalteeDog, I will give that a go when I get home. I found a few bouquets Mr Mister, silverfox etc. Also the auto bouquets plugini s listed in the vix plugins, I will give them a go..

I used autobouquets and it seems to do what it says.

However, not being a former Sky subscriber, I'm not a fan of the way the channels are organised in most of the ready-made bouquet packages.

What I did was as follows.

    1. Downloaded the SgtFlipFlop bouquet set from worldofsatellite.
    2. Used DreamboxEdit to modify that to create my own 'Favourites' bouquet which has everything I watch other than the Saorview channels.
    3. Loaded my modified SgtFlipFlop set to the GigaBlue.
    3. Ran a manual scan on the gigable for terrestrial channels. These then appear in the last-scanned bouquet.
    4. Reload the bouquests from the Gigablue back to my laptop using DreamboxEdit (these now include the 'last scanned'.
    5. Move the Saorview channels into my Favourites bouquet.
    6. Using DreamBoxEdit FTP the full Bouquet set back to the Gigablue.

Steps 4,5,6 can be by-passed if you wish to manually edit the Bouquets directly on the Gigablue using the menus but that's more time-consuming.

Thanks for that, I was trying to find an easy to understand method of doing this.. Doesn't get much clearer than that.

    Hi SalteeDog

I see you have a post up on wos regarding the aspect ratio over scart. I am having the same issue on an old phillips 16:9 tv over scart, did you get it sorted ? the picture is perfect on a 1080p monitor I have using hdmi.

    Thanks

    Mr. Mister sorted me out.
Menu > Set Up > System > User Interface > Position Set Up, all is ok now...
