2008 Vectra; Yay or Nay?

So after a year of saying I was getting a diesel and moaning about my current car, I'm FINALLY going to get a new (to me) car.

As I've said many times before, I haven't a notion when it comes to cars, but I want a diesel, I want comfort, I want something 2008 or newer and all this for less than 8k.

I realise diesel cars need servicing more frequently, this doesn't bother me, but I believe (I could be wrong) different types of diesel engines can cost more to repair.

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Opel/Vectra/1-OWNER-/813269838452220/advert?channel=CARS

There's a few of these around the place, and they seem to fit what I'm looking for. Anyone got any opinions? Is it a good car and will it do me a few years?

    Thanks!

First things first, what kind of mileage do you do and is it mainly urban or motorway?

500 miles per week, all motorway, bar driving through the town to get to the motorway.

Why are you asking? He already said he wants a diesel

Because if the OP isn't doing the miles required for a diesel he'll make no savings from the premium he would pay to purchase the car over its petrol equivalent.

Also, what's the budget OP? I'd try and get a better specced Vectra than that to be honest. That's paddy spec right there.

Awww, all of a sudden I've changed to a man!!:D

Budget is 8k at an absolute maximum. What do you mean by paddy spec? What specs would be better for the Vectra?

    Thanks!

What I mean by Paddy spec is: No alloys, no leather seats/half leather, no sat-nav, bluetooth or any other such luxuries.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2996616

    This has:

    Parking Sensors
Cruise Control (for racking up those motorway miles in comfort)
    6 Speed Gearbox.

Ah, thanks for that. To be honest those luxuries aren't massively important to me and I'd happily do without them, but if I can get them at that price, then why not?!

Tbh, I wouldn't touch that vaux unless it's got full service history.

The more I looked at it the more I thought that!

If it looks too good to be true....

I saw a load of 08-D black Vectra's that came off some form of fleet and they had massive mileage on them.

Like everything though, a good pre purchase inspection is always required.

Confuses me how someone could pay that much money on a car that bloody boring though, Jaysus.``

I'd buy a Mondeo. Far superior to drive and nicer looking. Probably more reliable too. It has the blue oval badge, so you'll be 'one of the flock'.

    Nothing wrong with a Vectra, maybe boring but can be had for a good price. They come in three spec levels;
    LIFE
    CLUB
    DESIGN
Even the life spec comes with AC and cruise control along with a factory fitted alarm. The club spec really only adds visual extras, silver strips, alloy look-a-like wheels etc. The Design spec is the one to go for if you can have it for good money.

The petrol model I had had a timing chain, I would assume the diesels to be the same, but its one less thing to worry about. They are a reliable car, but don't get much cred because of there 'boring' rep. All that means though is that you can get good value as a buyer.

Yeah,go with Ollie's advice- the last thing I need is one more person looking for a decent 07 diesel Avensis!! Tearing me jaysus hair out at the minute...

They also come in sri and exclusive spec delly. And maybe elite too. The sri models are in abundance nut you would definitely have to get a full check as many are imports. If you get the 150bhp cdti version i would strongly advise getting the swirl flaps blanked off

Ah, forgot about SRi, although I think the exclusive was exclusively a UK spec level, pardon the pun ;). I had Club myself, handed it back after 3 years without a single mark on my 'alloys'. Ah company car ownership, back when things were a lot easier.

Agreed. No idea why anyone would buy a Vectra over a Mondeo..

This is from he parkers website...

This is the third generation of the Mondeo. It’s also the largest, most comfortable, and best equipped, with a model to suit most buyers. The entry level cars are the best large hatchbacks you can buy and far superior to the Vauxhall Vectra and Renault Laguna. Overlook the Ford badge and the top range models rival prestige cars like the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in terms of build quality and driving experience. Prices have actually come down for this new Mondeo, despite the fact that it's better equipped, safer and bigger than before. The flipside to this is that the huge discounts that were previously available will now be much more difficult to come by. In 2010 the Mondeo has received a little cosmetic surgery, the most noticeable part of this refresh it the new nose-job. The front-end has had a complete overhaul, this includes an enlarged lower grille and a smaller upper grille, while the rear receives new LED tail-lights, an all-new bumper, a reshaped valance and an integrated rear spoiler. The interior has also had a little nip/tuck. There is now a one-piece central console, it is soft to touch and the plastics are of a higher quality. More kit is offered as standard including blind-spot alerts, lane-departure steering-wheel vibrators, an alertness assessor, a rear-view camera, automatic headlight dipping speed limiter and LED daytime running lights. Read on to find out why the new Mondeo has its German rivals in its sights...

Hi. If you are buying a vectra diesel. Have the fly wheel checked. We bought an SRI 150 Bhp Diesel one up north and had to replace this after 6 months (65,000 miles). Expensive to fix. Other than that problem they are a class car. Wife gets around 55 mpg and loves the car.
