So if you were to choose which one would you buy?

A Hyundai i40 saloon 1.7 executive or the Opel Insignia. I'm tryin to convince the old man to buy the Hyundai. He had toyota's since the mid 80s but doesn't like the new avensis one bit.

    So any thoughts

I40 for me... longer warranty and it looks at least as good as the Insignia

I40 or hold out a few weeks for the superior optima

I'm going to go against the tide of opinions and go for the Insignia.

SC 2.0CDTi 130ps with the Plus Pack. Apparently the engine for this year (with the start/stop) is much better than it was last year, for power delivery, comes with Sat Nav as standard, and I love the wheels on the SC Plus Pack.

Hyundai is nice, but from the brief look I've had at the saloon, seems to be a bit smaller than the Insignia/Mondeo/Passat, and I have my reservations about the resale values of Hyundai and Kia (which is a shame, as they are very good cars now).

Retail price of the Insignia is going to be higher, but there are always good deals to be had with Opel, but you'll struggle to get a decent discount off Hyundai on such a new car.

And, shouldn't we be buying European cars, in the current climate?

The inferior Optima you mean... seems they didn't do quite as good a job on it. The engine is not as well insulated, and manages to be less economical with higher emissions.

The way the Germans and French are treating us, I'd say we should buy anything but! :)

Out of those probably the Insignia. But does it have to be one or the other of those two?

If I were choosing for me I'd rather walk. But in choosing on behalf of your Da, I'd take the Hyundai

Hey, they're paying your doctors, teachers and Gardai. I don't see much assistance from the Koreans coming our way.

We should buy European cars where possible.

Yep. Cars designed and manufactured in Europe, though.

Buy a British manufactured Nissan/Honda or Toyota, if that's your wish.

Anything to help the European economy should be encouraged.

The Insignia is manufactured in Germany.

The Insignia is manufactured in Germany.

At the end of the day, the profits still go to GM who are an American company. Toyota, Nissan, Honda, etc all manufacture cars in Europe but their profits still go to their parent companies in Japan. Same with Ford.

If people are using the logic of supporting these manufacturers who employ Europeans to build their cars then Hyundai have design studios, etc employed in Europe too.

Of the "European" manufactuerers how many actually use parts made in Europe? Is an Insignia entirely made up of European only parts? So when people get all patriotic about supporting this sort of stuff, where is the line drawn?

Anyway loyalty is a two way street, I buy what suits my pocket the best.

Nope, we are. 9% interest rate on their loan they gave us? Feck sake... it's 20 years since mortgages were that high!

Poor loyalty there, IMO. The 'profits' are only a small part of what you pay.

Why would anyone consider supporting an Asian economy when our own needs all the help it can get.

Opel, VW, Ford etc all buy huge amounts from European suppliers, I don't see the Koreans doing that.

Loyalty? To what? Listen to yourself! If I have any loyalty, it's to local businesses here in Ireland. Buying a 508 or Passat doesn't help us in this country one little bit. It may help people in Germany or France, but why should I help them more than a Japanese or Korean person? They're no less human...

I have no more or less loyalty to the German or French economy than I do to the Korean or American economy. Equally Germany and France have no loyalty to this country's economy other than getting the money they loaned us back with interest. As we do not have a motor industry of our own any make you buy will have the same end result here - contribute to the exchequer and sustain employment.
