Hey Guys, I have ordered a Maycom FR 100 receiver from a crowd in England. The main reason I got it is to save me going on the net everytime I want to check the ATIS before I make the 30 minute journey to Weston - only to find out theres a sh1t cloud base.

My question is, does anyone know what sort of range you get with these receivers, are they good enough to pick up Galway, Knock and Cork? Also any thoughts on the Maycom receiver? It seemed to get good reviews on the net, any first hand experiences?

    Thanks
Ps. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I though you could call Weston Atis on 01 621 7324.

The chances are if you're 30 minutes away, you'll need an external antenna to pick up ground-based comms such as an ATIS, particularly EIWT which isn't a very strong signal. Depending on where you are, a discone high in the attic and some decent quality cable could work for you. I have that sort of setup, sometimes it can take a bit of re-positioning of the antenna, but it usually works. Baldonnel's ATIS comes in handy too, being so close to Weston, and is usually a stronger signal.
Regarding your second question- depending on atmospheric conditions, I can often pick up Shannon, Scottish and London FIS.

If you mean picking up the ATIS at Galway, Knock and Cork from where you are in Dublin no chance normally. ATIS transmitters are short range.

Get your external antenna as high as you can get it. Also you buy a airband pre-amp (goes between the antenna and your scanner) that will help to pull in weak signals as well.

Hi, Maycom has got good reviews. I am not sure of your location but unless you are reasonably near to airports your chances of receiving are not great the reason being they are on pretty low power. Some people that hear Shannon get confused between UIR ,FIR and the airport, the reason that UIR and FIR is heard is that there a number of Transmitters around the country. The best chance to get the best out of your receiver is to erect an external antennae as high as possible and if there is a long cable run get as good quality cable as you can afford. The best of luck and happy listening.

Thanks for your reply guys, if i can pick up weston or baldonnell ATIS and Dublin tower I would be happy. Anything more would be a bonus. Im living in Malahide so im hoping i dont have to start messing around with aerials and stuff. Does living close to a Garda Station Mast help in anyway? Thanks again.
