I have been a member of an LGBT soc since 2009 when I started college. I dropped out just before the end of first year, but continued to go the the weekly meetings and nearly all the big events during the year. This year I was elected as a supervisor for out annual rainbow week. But was then told by our president that because I was no longer a student i wasnt covers by insurance and that I wasn't allowed to be part of the soc, and I was to have no other involvement in rainbow week. Does any body have any suggestions on how to get around this? I'm so gutted!

It'd probably depend on the college and their regulations on societies, I imagine. I've never heard of a non-student getting elected to a position in a college society before.

I'm afraid there isn't a way around it, a non-student cannot be a member of a student society, members of the general public do not have a right to attend meetings (or even be on campus) and are not covered by insurance which could potentially put the society in a bad place.

Might I suggest you find a public group to join or event to work towards? For example, if you're round Dublin the Pride fest is currently recruiting volunteers and I'd keep an eye on GAZE too as I think they were looking for interns recently. If you're more interested in just being part of a group or society there are plenty around if you look, and I'm sure if you ask nicely somebody here could point you in the right direction...

Going off books is very different from dropping out.

Yea fair enough I don't really get what that means, but you aren't a registered student so in terms of insurance Im not sure what the difference is.

It's a sabbatical year, u are a student it's just like deferring your course for a an academic year and would be completely different to a non-student.

As far as I know, those guys are technically employed by their societies, so they are covered that way.

Either way, unless it's a very specific case, non-students can't be members of college societies.

I think that there isn't much you can do.

Are gay kerry that bad? Could you not try and engage with them a little?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Dang I was worried the "kerry" bit of your username meant that... bearing in mind I don't know the lay of the land down there, you're not the first one here to have something negative to say about gay kerry, and given that you've been around a gay society a while and were elected to a supervisory position, so should have an understanding of how to organise these things - why not look into starting your own group? These things have to start somewhere...
