Moving home and rent supplement

Hi guys, hope you can help me out with this:

I've been living in shared rented accommodation for a year now and recently I lost my job. My girlfriend, who is a full time student, moved in with me a while back with plans to get our own place soon.

I'm on JSA now and we've made an application to the housing authority as I know that's the first step to getting rent supplement. We're now looking at single bed apartments in the same local authority and underneath the €700 threshold for cohabiting couples, but I'm a bit confused as to whether we would be allowed a rent supplement if we moved into a new place.

If we moved before the housing authority had made their decision, and before we had made an application for rent supplement, would that stop us from being eligible for RS for our new apartment? We viewed something tonight that we really want to put a deposit down for, but don't want to get caught in a situation where we are paying rent we can't afford.

    Thanks!

If you have been in private rented accommodation for the past 6 months, and if you were able to afford your rent at the start of your tenancy out of your own funds (ie, you were not on a social welfare payment), then you do not need to be assessed by the local authority to receive rent supplement, and can apply straight away.

You are advised not to move into a property until you have your rent supplement approved, but this is not always practical. If you do meet the above criteria, the chances are that you will be eligible for rent supplement and will get the payment backdated to the date you applied for it.

If you don't meet the above criteria, then you need to have the assessment approved before you can receive rent supplement. If you don't have the assessment completed, you'll be stuck with the rent until such time as it has been!

Alternatively, if your girlfriend meets the above criteria and you don't, then she could be the applicant for rent supplement.

Run your proposed plans by your local Community Welfare Officer/rents unit to keep yourself right.
