paint is a protective coating. Staining is just a colourant and usually has no protective qualities. Of course, I'm open to correction on that.

A stained window would have to have a clear protective coating after staining, i.e a suitable varnish. Of course there are many different products now on the market that have varying properties combining stain and finishing coat.
As to whether paint or wood finish is better, I thing either done correct should be fine.
On a side note, I never agree with architects when they recommend fitting wooden windows saying that maintenance is only a hour or so every 4 years. Nothing could be further from the truth really.

We had 8 large hardwood timber windows and gave them 3 coats of woodstain when fitted with a good quality brand woodstain.

What I found was you needed to restain every 2 years as the sunlight faded the woodstain even though it was 18 euro a litre and was anti UV anti fungiside:rolleyes:

This wasn't a problem as I liked diy and it took 20mins a window.

We also had wooden exterior shutters and they were painted white. The paint didnt last long eventhough the old paint was stripped sanded and undercoated and repainted.

The paint blistered and peeled off in places after 8 months.

I like stain but just be prepared to repaint/ stain sooner than you think or fit UPVC.
