Went to the my garage... says my alternator is giving the issue.. Screeching noise when i press the accelerator. Waiting on a second hand one as car is 2000. What happens if I wait too long?

If it screeches when you press the accelerator it usually means the belt is loose or stretched. Not that a new alternator is needed.

What the garage told you doesn't sound right to me.

A screeching alternator? Are they sure it's not just the belt? They should be able to source a 2nd hand alternator quite swiftly anyway, as in within a few days.

Belt was changed, he took out my alternator and put in another second hand one and it was worse (the noise)

You can hear the noise when its ticking over too.

I've never heard an alternator to screech, just the belt. What car do you have?

With the engine running and the alternator belt off did the humming/screeching/whatever still happen?

Now humming is a different kettle of fish altogether! Mabey the alternator has "dried" out. Any chance you could record it and post it up?

Also was it the same noise when the second alternator was put in?

Not sure.. Was with garage.. he said to me, he put on second alternator and the noise was worse.. so he put back on mine again. Yes same noice.. Ya can record it and put it online for ye to hear.

Said to drive away with it as would be fine. Just concerned what happens if I keep driving it.

Dunno (sort of a hummy screech according to you !!!!), but the chance of the replacement being equally noisy are slim.
