upgrading iphone without original computer

Firstly, Mods, if this question has been asked lots of times before I apologise, please feel free to merge it. I wasn't really sure what to search for.

I have an iphone 3gs. I got it in July 2010. I'm pretty sure I've never upgraded the software. When I bought it I had a Mac Book Pro. This has since completely died. I would love to get a new phone, either 4 or 4S but I haven't done so yet because I'm worried I'll lose all my music. Is there any way of backing up my phone onto a computer I haven't used itunes on before? so that when I buy the new phone I can sync it with all my own content?

    Cheers for your help.
