Hi guys, I am having a recurring problem with my laptop over the past few months where the screen randomly goes black for no reason. If i try and restart the laptop it goes to a black screen on boot up. After days of trying various things it can randomly just work again! but its gone again and its driving me around the bend. Its a relatively oldish laptop. Any ideas on this problem? Cheers

What model is that? Does it display anything on external monitor? When you press power button does manufacturer logo always appear? Have you tried moving a lid when this black screen happen. Have a look closely under strong light if it is not just extremally dim instead of just black

It could be the switch that turns of the screen when you shut the lid.

you could re-installing xp , if u have a copy of the original disc , but wait until you have the opportunity when the laptop is working to save any files photos etc to a memory stick , if uve no xp disc you could take a chance on downloading a boot disk and burning it with magiciso etc , look up boot disk on YouTube for more info , but u'll have to decide wether its a software or hardware problem before you take these steps , if its hardware ud be as well to buy a refurb laptop for 130 ish on ebay , as it might cost to much to repair
