Joke would have been valid in Ireland about 30 years ago. Delivered reusable glass bottles with foil lids are still used in Australia.

We use to have eight bottles delivered every morning in a metal crate, if we were not up in time the cream would be nicked.

My old man use get the milkman to place a piece of plywood over the caps, some mornings this would be knocked over. Crows being the main culprits.

As far back as I can remember we always got the older shape Tetra cartons (shaped like a hardback book is the best I can describe them - shorter, thinner but a lot wider than the current type); Dawn Daries wasn't concerned with recycling obviously.

I remember one morning going out for the milk only to find a pack of birds pecking crazily into a block of butter we also got delivered. The thing was like a block of swiss cheese by that point.

I do miss the glass bottles though, the milk always tasted better from them.

You would never find a film of cream built up in any carton of milk unless you are willing to pay double the price for organic.

The cream, (or "the top of the bottle" as it was called in our house, as in "I bags the top of the bottle!") only forms in non-homogenised milk, doesn't necessarily have to be organic. I think I remember Marks and Spencer's selling non-homogonised milk a while back.

And I miss the glass bottles too!
