IS there any downside to powering on a disk for a few minutes only ?

I use several external disks for storing mp3s and movies, and attach and power them up for only a short time, to copy to internal hard disk and the watch.

Is there any life expectancy downside to this ? I wouldn't be doing this often.

No, you just have to use schedule maintenance B: so instead of changing the oil every 5,000 miles, you change it after every 3,0000. Other than that, no. It shouldn't affect the hard drive at all.

I was just wondering if the number of spin-ups would affect the life. I think this is reported in SMART data.

    Shouldn't matter at all.
Infact it's similar utilisation to what we do here.

Google released a report on the age, utilisation, temp and SMART stats of their data centres drives a few years ago.
    It's a surprising read.
Disks don't fail when we might expect, nor for the reasons we might expect.

Have a look that this: http://storagemojo.com/2007/02/19/googles-disk-failure-experience/
