Supporting one player?

I don't like using the word fanboy or whatever, but is it not a bit weird to support just one player rather than a club? I've read posts on other websites from Swedish lads who basically don't care for any team, they're just obsessed with Ibrahimovic and that's it.

I get how people have favourite players obviously, but is it not a bit odd to follow one player INSTEAD of a club?

Not really, know a few lads that would feel the same about Roy Keane

hahaha so you watch Lille games for him alone, yeah? what I'm asking is do you not really care about the result, just how Hazard plays? and do you support another team anyway?

it's just the favourite player at your club then, isn't it?

Not if it's a player from another club.

Its a very Asian and American thing. Thats why image rights have become so important.

Like when CR7 leaves Real, the same people who have his Manyoo and Real shirts, will have his Man City shirt, or whatever.

I support Celtic and Liverpool. Pity, King Kenny never played for Borussia Dortmund ;)

ah, well that's what I was asking EdenHazard.

that's still different. what I'm talking about is following one player and that's it, no interest in how a particular club does in the long run.

Support Celtic but players like Larsson, Paddy McCourt and Roy Keane I would have a huge interest in whomever they played for.

Yeah man I just watch Lille for Hazard. I watch West Brom as well to see Shane Long and Everton to see Donovan. Load of players that I'll watch a game just because they're playing but these 3 are the ones I've most interest at the moment.

Always used to watch Zidane when I had the chance, always fascinated by how natural a footballer he was.

    Andy Reid.

He just happens to play for the team I support too. Followed his career closely since he first broke through at Forest and won the Euros with the U-16s in '98. Attended the Canada game at Lansdowne in '03 when he made his senior debut. I was so happy for him. His injury at Sunderland a couple of years ago really set him back, he was in the form of his life at the time.

I'm not goin to even speak about Trapattoni's treatment of him, suffice to say it's been disgraceful. I don't care if he got us to the Euros, the man is the anti-christ of everything football should be.

Having an obsession over one player is very sad if you ask me.

i know a lad who became a blackburn fan in 95. then, when newcastle had a 12 point lead a year or 2 later, he became a newcastle fan. he claimed he was just following shearer.

guess who he supports now? chelsea. i expect him to start buying city jerseys next season.

On the Man city forums i read we get it a good bit and tbh its really annoying. I have no problem with someone supporting just one player as long as they call it as they see it but it gets tedious when they give out cos their player got criticized or taken off or someone didn't pass it to them when they had a chance etc etc. We had it with Samaras and now we have it with Dzeko, according to Dzeko "fanboys" if he played we would win every match and is beyond any sort of criticism, which is very annoying when the player is a half arsed player and doesnt always try.

Like a normal football fan? Or like a normal fan of any team sport for that matter?

I wouldn't go all out any root for a team just because I like one of their players, although I do want to see Ronnie do well with Real after leaving United.

But a prime example of such followings would be my father. He doesn't follow any current players, but he goes for whatever club Martin O'Neill manages, he thinks MON is good enough to be the future United manager.

Certainly not instead of my Club but I followed Madrid and LA Galaxy (and Milan to an extent) much more closely and supported them from afar after they signed Beckham.

    Whataguy.

I know someone who followed Alan Shearer and supported the teams he played for, Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle in that order one after the other! I did think it a bit strange at the time.
