Do I need wall aerial for Irish digital channels

    Guys,

I already have a combo box working perfectly in living room. Irish digital channels are picked up from digital aerial in attic with aerial socket on living room wall. I want to put a combo in another room at the other end of house with no aerial socket plate on wall and no access to the digital aerial in attic.

Will this combo box pick up the Irish channels without having an aerial plugged into the box?

    Thanks

You need a feed from an aerial to the box.

No, aerial always required. It might work with a small indoor aerial if the signal is good enough where you locate it.

    Thanks Guys,

I could try it with rabbit ears. Are there specific digital rabbit ears required?

there is really no such thing as a digital aerial.try a uhf indoor aerial something like these http://www.ebay.ie/sch/Satellite-Cable-Freeview-/15069/i.html?_nkw=uhf+indoor+aerial

Don't spend that kind of money on an indoor aerial, something like this more directional type will probably work better for a fraction of the cost.

you could run the aerial connection outside.

    Thanks Guys,

Think i'll probably give that small direction aerial a go. I think there is enough reception about to pick up the digital Irish channels. I'll give it a go!

I take it you have a satellite dish and a feed to that room too (or why else would you be using a combo-box rather than a regular Saorview set top box?). If you have a satellite feed it should be possible to combine the attic aerial signals and the Satellite signals in the same cable and split them at the wall-socket.

Yes, I intend to purchase a twin LNB and bring a satellite feed to this new room at the other end of the house without going through the attic. For my other room with combo box already installed, i have used a combiner and split at the wall socket using one of those special wall plates. Trouble is this other room doesnt have any wall sockets and is located away from the main attic with an attic of its own which doesn't make things ideal.

Well since you are drilling holes and running cables, it may make sense to stick up a outside UHF aerial too while you are at it.

And if you are buying a new LNB, get a quad so you can run extra connections. They are the same sort of price as a dual.

Also, look to use splitter/combiner so that the two signals can run down the one cable to the room. Only one cable required for each combi. Two cables would allow use of a PVR.

    Hi Sam,
Will take that advice thanks. Is there such thing as a combiner which has two inputs and two outputs (one output for sat and terrestrial channels on one combo) and another (output for sat and terrestrial on the second combo)?

You can't do that with a simple satellite/terrestrial diplexer, each receiver needs a separate feed from the lnb.

If you want to use two combis, then a splitter like this - http://www.tvtrade.ie/amplifiers-and-diplexers/satellite-combiners.html will do, but you need to split the aerial, and it all gets messy. A multiswitch begins to make sense for more that two combis. It all depends on what you want to achieve - and how deep your pockets are.

You are moving outside DIY when you move onto the multiswitch.

what would you use at the other end then to split the signal up to connect at the TV end?

One of these http://www.tvtrade.ie/amplifiers-and-diplexers/satellite-combiners.html or this http://www.tvtrade.ie/wolsey-tv-aerial-and-satellite-wall-plate.html
