Are DSG gearboxes reliable in used cars?

    Hi All

    I am looking at a 2007 Golf 1.9tdi with a DSG gearbox. Its got about 130 KM on the clock.

    I was wondering how reliable is DSG in cars with higher mileage?

    Is there anything that fails in them or that is a weakness area I should watch for.

    the gearbox oil should be changed at about 50k ... its a job that will cost between €250 - 400 depending on who you get to do it.

    The gearbox oil and filter should be changed every 60,000km and special tools are required to do the job. I believe main dealers charge from €250 upwards to do this depending on where you go. Independents who are equipped to do the job would charge an average of €175.

    I have heard stories of them giving problems but in our experience of maintaining them they are pretty reliable once serviced correctly. Plenty of taxis are DSG Octavias so that is always a good sign as well because those guys wouldn't be using them if the boxes were falling out of them every week.

    As well as watching for service history on the gearbox be aware that they do have a dual mass flywheel just like the manual version but that it costs more to change. So buying one with the flywheel replaced would be a major advantage.

    Something called a mechatronic lets go on TT DSGs regularly according to frequent posts on the TT forum in the UK. I have no idea what it does and what it costs to fix.

    i wouldnt class 130,000 km as high millage on a 5 year old diesel car.

    No but for some reason the motor buying populace of Ireland seems to. Anything north of 100k is a no no it seems.:confused:

    no wonder clocking is so common in this country. if people looked for a full service history instead of how many miles on the clock there would a lot less of it.

    We still haven't got over the changeover to kms. When we hear 100,000 we immediately think of miles and think its a no no. If you said the car had 62,000 mile it wouldnt seem nearly as bad!
