It's a known issue and now it has happened to mine!
I was on the M1 south when the crackshaft pulley gave out.
I has to drive about 2km to get to the nearest sliproad to get off the motorway.

How much damage may I have caused to the crankshaft/timing etc by driving with a damaged pulley?

    I'll answer myself so -

2 rocker arms broken and a crankshaft pulley replaced.
No damage to pistons - new timing belt - in fact all belts replaced.
    New front engine cover.

€650 for parts and repair plus the €120 towing fee.

Did not know they had this issue.

You got away lightly enough considering. Was the head removed to check the valves?

Head was removed - rocker arms replaced and valve timings set up.
I know I got away lightly - could have destroyed the cylinder heads, pistons, con rods - a multitude of things!

A new regular check for me is to see if there is any vibration or lateral or radial eccentricity on any pulleys when the engine is idling.

When having to replace the crankshaft pulley should I replace the bolt. Reason I ask is that my pulley is on the way out and these parts ar sold separately.
