Ripped off by Garage

    Hi,
My car failed the NCT last week due to high emissions. I brought it to a garage who does NCT repairs, I gave them the NCT report and they "fixed it" charged my €400 and told me that my car will now pass the NCT.

Brought my car for the NCT today and it failed once again. The tester came out and told me that there was no point in testing my car because the problem wasnt fixed. He said that he seen that I got a new exhaust but that it wasn't the problem, he said I either need new spark plugs or a coil repack (something like that) because the engine was over fueling.

He said it should cost me about €60.

I am really annoyed, I had to pay €400 for repairs that wernt required and it still wasn't fixed. What can I do here? Does the garage have to give me a refund?

I paid by card but I was thinking of just doing a charge back but not sure if that is the right idea.

    Thanks

If there are a member of SIMI, you should call the Society of the Irish Motor Industry who are the governing body for the motor trade.

You should also contact the National Consumer Council.

    Do they help consumers?
I thought SIMI was only there to protect the garages?

Quiet the opposite, find out if the garage was registered by SIMI and give them a shout Monday morning if they are.

Other wise small claims court maybe?

Yes they are registered by SIMI, its on their headed paper anyway and on a boards thread I found on them.

I'll give SIMI a call tomorrow then, thanks.

Seems strange that he wouldn't test it anyway? Did you pay for the retest? High emmissions can be be caused by a number of things. A bad catalytic converter (in your exhaust) could be the problem.

He did test the emissions, but nothing really changed. He gave me a refund for the test that's why they said he wouldn't finish the test.

He came out and told me that he knows that the car was overfueling and that was causing the high emissions. He said it could just be new spark plugs or a coil pack at most.

I already had the cat replaced and some other stuff connected to the exhaust.

Sorry about that, my first post wasn't very clear.

Not yet, they wernt open today.

I just wanted to get an idea of if I am actually in the right here and they shouldn't have told me that I needed this done to pass the NCT when I didn't. I feel kind of weird going over looking for a refund or something to be done when I authorized them to do the work.

I went over to the garage today.

They said that the over fuelling didn't show up on the diagnostics the first time. The told me to drop it back over to them tomorrow. Not sure if they are looking to be paid again or not. Or if I should be paying them again.

Nope, I'm an 18 year old male. But they would have known when I went in that I didn't have a clue what was going on.

I could be wrong, but I thought any fuelling error codes would remain in the ECU until cleared.
