    Hey all,

Just wondering which lifeguard qualification would be better for working abroad (USA, France etc.), IWS or RLSS. I currently am almost finished getting my lifeguarding qualification with the IWS but wondering if I should change to the RLSS.

    Please advise,
    Thanks

RLSS, would be more recognised than the IWS, also RLSS is cheaper and quicker to do as in the course. IWS you have to do all these levels, its kind of a pain. I preferred the RLSS course went into more depth about things, and was very practical. IWS course is a bit outdated compared to the RLSS. So I would go with the RLSS course.

    having done both,

iws is definitely better in most ways, stuff done in more depth and reinforced a hell of a lot more since you spend more time building the skills.
it's got a lot of emphasis on water safety early on which really makes for a good lifeguard

rlss, seems to be a case of if the check clears you're sound!
which is very handy if you need to get it done quick

these are just my experiences of course

coming through the Water Safety ranks makes for a MUCH better lifeguard both in and out of the water

RLSS is more of a course to do for the qualification to get working, IWS is sort of like a vocation, it takes a while to get through it, its a much more in depth course and a tougher one to pass, but to be honest I've held both for over ten years and the only difference in output is reflected by the intake, IWS seems to get a lot of club swimmers and people that started at an early age, so they are around pools more, and have a better feel and understanding for aquatic environments, RLSS is about training someone to do a job in limited time with limited resources, so naturally there is a difference in standard, attitude etc.
Both have more or less equal status as far as a job is concerned, an employer would give more weight to the rest of your CV and how long you've held a cert for, than which cert it is.
