    Hey guys,

We live in a 60 year old terraced house that was built with 2 open fires, one upstairs and one downstairs.

We wallpapered over the fire in the bedroom many years ago and got a gas fire installed downstairs (which we rarely use)

Was just wondered would it be possible to use the open fire in the bedroom even though we have a gas fie downstairs or would this be a safety risk?

    Cheers

    Alan

You should get someone out to check that the pipes haven't become blocked.
Otherwise I don't see an issue.

Get a chimney sweep to clean the chimney and fit a carbon monoxide alarm.

I would have a concern that the two fireplaces would share the same flue, which would be considered dangerous as the the flue gases from the fire below may enter the bedroom or vice versa. Do. It use until this has been checked and verified.

Check the top of the chimney outside, hopefully you'll have two flues, one for downstairs and one for the bedroom.

    Otherwise, +1 as recommended above.

Our bedroom has a fireplace too, we had it swept & used it once when we moved in, we agreed aah this is lovely, then we blocked the flue to get rid of the draught!

If its a typical 1950s-60s built terraced house, then you should have at least 4 chimney pots on the chimney top.It wil be a shared chimney stack.

2 would be for your neighbours fireplaces and 2 would be for yours.

1 will be the living room fireplace, and the other will be for the bedroom fireplace.

The fireplaces and chimney liners should be inspected and cleaned out by a registered professional chimney sweeper, before any fires are lit.

    Simples.
