Megane top up oil light came on

I have a 2011 Megane 106 tomtom. Service interval is set for 30,000 km or 24 months. Currently 13 months in and 21000 km on the clock the "top up oil" light came on it yesterday.

Question is, is it safe to drive or should I top up and if so what oil is recommended. I did contact the dealer at 20,000 about a service but receptionist told me it was ok up to 30,000 which I thought was a long period on the same oil. I was told it uses the more expensive oil than the 90bhp model and this is why its stretched to 30,000. I will try book it in this week regardless but in the meantime top it up?

Dip it and see how low it is. If it is above the minimum level it is ok. If it is below then top it up.

The correct oil for your car Is not widely available. It is Renault spec RN0720 which is a 5w30 C4 spec oil. Most common long life 5w30 such as Castrol Edge is C3 spec RN0710. If you are stuck this will do for topping up but is not ideal for the engine.

In future if I were you I would do an oil service every 15,000km and then the normal service every 30,000km as scheduled. I would not recommend leaving oil in any engine for 30,000km.

Renault dealers charge €140 for an oil service as far as I know. You will get the same job done in an independent garage for €90 or so if you wanted. Just make sure they are aware of the oil requirements for your engine.

Thanks for the reply. Just dipped it there and its showing low but not below the minimum. Also checked on the digital display and its showing 2 bars out of 5. Will leave it in this week for service and follow your guide re the 15,000 to be on the safe side.

    Thanks again.
