    Hi Guys,

I drive a 04 passat, got into the car to drive up the road, and as i turn the wheel left and right going at lower speeds, there is a knocking noise coming from the front left.

There is nothing visably catching the wheel. I have no idea where the noise is coming from, and should i be driving it?

    Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a CV joint to me.

Agree with bbam. Probably a CV joint.

Look at the driveshafts and check if the CV boots (the plastic flexible cover on the joint itself) are intact. You will likely find one is split and has allowed the crud from the road into the joint which chews it up over a short time.

If thats the case, a new joint and boot will be needed.

Check the opposite side too for splitting even if there is no knocking. Chances are the boot will be cracked or split. Generally, they don't be too far apart in condition, unless of course one was changed.

Looking at both sides and the cv boots, they seem to look the same. My knowledge of car parts in terrible. I took a couple of pics of the left side, probably no help but anyway...

    Thanks for the advice lads.

Those pictures dont show the C.V. joint. One is of the upper arms and the second is of the steering rack boot. The C.V. is the constant velocity joint (its the mechanical coupling that applies torque to the wheel). Its best seen from underneath or you can turn the steering lock to lock to observe both sides.

To the garage / motor factors, yes, but I wouldn't leave it too much longer.

Once the grease in those joints is replaced with grit from the road, a couple of hundred miles will make a fair job out of them!.

    More good news !!
I'd say the shock in your first photo (004.jpg) is also knackered, oil leaked out and down the outside of the shock...

    Have it looked at too...

Spotted that too but thought I'd leave it alone.

There is another possibility if its the same side as that split boot, and it's where the grease from the CV joint has been thrown up on the shock.

sorry lads, didn't see the last 2 posts as i didn't get an email update. Brought the car to the garage, 150quid for a new cv joint, getting it done in the next couple of days.

And i'll mention to them about the shock leaking, as bbam stated.

    Thanks for the help lads.
