Was handled (ok my backpack, not my body) in the male toilets of my local pub, there was verbals and some further verbals from their women in the main bar. The new proprietor took me seriously but he said that he can't withness what goes on in the toilet. I got 2 free drinks as compensation then left. In this case and for potential future reference, what's the law? could the owner be sued?.

this is why people turn a blind eye. People like you!

The guy probably trying to be nice to his customer after some ugly incident and you take this as an admission of guilt and want to sue him!?!?!?!??!?!

It has nothing to do with money,it's about ensuring a safe environment...and ensuring that having one's bag groped and having to face verbals is unacceptable,it's only by standing up to it that the message will become clear to proprietors that they must ensure that the venues they run are safe.

First two respondants your being very unfairly judgmental, assuming a financial motivation, shame on you.

Out of curiosity, what would you like for the owner / manager to do in the case of an allegation being made about something that there are no other witnesses to?

Why is the owner at fault? How exactly do you think he can police a policy to ensure incidents like this don't happen? Personality screening at the door? It baffles me that the automatic reaction is to sue the sympathetic owner and not the actual perpetrator..

^Gotta agree. I can't stand the attitude we have today where we just sue the crap out of anyone for any little incident, regardless of whether they're to fault or not

Did the proprietor warn them or throw them out?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Can someone enlighten me about as to what this has to do with LGBT?

Firstly to the op I'm sorry you have been harassed and are you okay?

    Secondly.....
I think a lot of posters have decided to jump to conclusions with little information to go on, and have decided to make assumptions about the character of the op based on their own imagination, unless you all were there? no?......so I'm gonna make an assumption of my own that is ...'if the op wanted abuse I'm guessing they would have stayed in the toilets being harassed and not post about it a "supportive" space', we don't know what the op has been through or at this point likely to considering the reception,

Can move this to 'Legal Discussion' at the OPs request.

Yeah I think a new thread under legal discussion would be better as the response here is remeniscent of the rabble in the toilet. I'm transgender (in the broad gender fluid sense) and while having my bag 'raped' might not have been gender motivated some of the remarks in the main bar were. I'm genuinely curious as to the law in this respect and the responsibility of the owner. I believe that it's only by speaking up that the world will become safer.

But no the posters here didn't bother to think of that? Your judgmental and remeniscent of the mad people in the pub. Shame on all of you and I'll know better than to post here in future. I know now the level of intellect that inhabits this forum, lower than that of a snakes arse. Shame on you.

    Agree with this.

Some posters just jumped in an accusatory manner without considering the issues or actually understanding or even trying to understand what the OP was getting at.

Harsh words pal, it's not as if we were aware of your transgenderism, and just because we disagree with you doesn't mean we're stupid. I certainly don't feel ashamed of what I posted.

to sue is to seek compensation in the common vernacular. Perhaps you mispoke, but we've nothing to go on but your words.

Maybe this level of abuse of posters is acceptable in this forum, contrary to general boards guidelines?
    Agree with this.

Some posters just jumped in an accusatory manner without considering the issues or actually understanding or even trying to understand what the OP was getting at.

Given you thanked the post accusing me of being judgmental, I'll assume your words extend to me. I asked the op to clarify where they thought liability might rest with the owner of the pub.

It seems to me that the OP describes an unacceptable interaction with some neanderthals and feels intimidated. The owner is told and the OP is comfortable to sit in the pub for a further 60-90 minutes. Thus I would have thought the intimidation had been resolved. Case opened and case closed, in respect of the owner. The opportunity remained to escalate to the authorities for a hate motivated assault against the actual perpetrators.

I would expect that further onus would fall on the owner in the event that a pattern of this type of intimidation emerged. A one off incident adequately addressed is not a pattern.

OP - I'll ask my original question again. What more could the owner have done to address this one off incident?
