How To Remove Fan Hood

I'm trying to give this old beast that I picked up a good cleaning as the fan stays on a lot.

There are two fans and one of them has a kind of big black hood over it which moves upwards a bit but doesn't lift off.

I want to remove this hood to gain access to the other fan above as its full of dust.

There is a green handle in the picture with 'closed' marked on it and it appears that it can be lifted up. Would this release the hood. I don't want to try anythig until I'm pretty sure what I'm doing. :D

hope someone can help me, tnks in advance.

The green clip should release the cooler, yep. Do you have some thermal paste to re-apply after you reseat it? Also some oems used glue thermal paste which is a b*tch to seperate the CPU from the cooler.
Unless absolutely neccesary I wouldn't remove it. If you want to clean it out turn off the computer, unplug power and carefully hoover it, don't touch any pc board with the hoover, make sure you only hoover out the fan.
Compressed air would work as well

    hi nick

Have the tower on its own with no leads connected. I released the green handle a bit until it touched the side of the fan hood but that didn't release the hood.

Saw a vid on utube which showed a similar green handle thingy and apparently that is to release the heatsink (is that same as cooler) but I don't want to go that far.

I need to remove that hood to clean things properly, there are no screws to remove. The hood is kinda two halves together and spring loaded.

The plates on the heatsink below this fan are clogged with dust so want to try to clean that up a bit.

I hope this hood and the heatsink aren't one integrated unit.

    here's a bigger pic.

Looking at that the hood should just pop off somehow, but I don't know not seen one like that before!

In fairness some heatsinks are more awkward than others, it looks to me from the big image that the cooler is sitting on top of the socket and it should come off, allowing the green lever to be used to take out the CPU, that would be my theory anyways. If you Google it you may get more clues ie packard bell [model no] cpu heatsink removal

I've googled away for the past week rephrasing the question and hardly anything coming up, not even a manual.

I'm in no hurry as this is more of a pet hobbie for me now more than anything, now that I know a lot more than I did in the past. :p

I'll wait and see if someone else might have a suggestion how to remove this hood and if not then I'll just clean it as best I can.

There was some junk inside and how it hasn't packed up god knows.

thanks for your help as usual nick, much appreciated.

also worth noting........ if using the hoover temporarily disconnect any cpu/case fan power cables from the motherboard as the hoover will make them spin thus turning them into dynamos which will damage the motherboard.

    tnks for that tip.

I figured it out in 5 mins today. :) After removing the two pull off springs I was then able to pull off the outer half of the hood. Then at the base of the 2nd half of the hood were 4 plastic tabs sticking up and I just squeesed them all at the same time and pulledl the bottom half of the hood off.

    Now to hire a skip:D

    She's purring like a pussy cat now:D

I was going to remove the psu unit for a proper cleaning but I couldn't disconnect the large multiplug. Anyway I eased it out with the wires attached.

Do you have to be a bit ruff with these larger plugs in order to remove them, was afraid I might damage the circuit board.

The ATX 20/24 pin connector? Theres a little tab on the side you push in and pull it out, be forceful but not overly, you need to make sure that the clip on the side is fully pressed down so the connector can slot out

I'm not sure but think its 24pin, and I am very familiar with the squeese in tab/s on connectors but this one looked different, in that it only had two tiny plastic sq like 'pins' sticking up on either side but slightly away from the connector.

These are way to small to be squeesed as far as I can see.

Could it just be a basic push n pull type of connector rather than a snap on.

Its a heatsink, to cool a chip. From looking at it there its probably the southbridge chip :)
