A married couple on JSA both nearly 60 years old, Old man is offered 4 hours paid work per day for five days per week beginning at the end of this year. Would the married couple be struck off then? If not what would they be entitled to? If they got JSA and he was allowed to work the 4 hours per day five days a week would they lose their medical card.
Thanking you all in advance for your replies.
    Kindest regards.
    Tom.

If he is working 5 days per week(hours do not matter its days worked) he will not be eligible for jsa but OH can make their own claim for jsa once they are genuinely seeking work and will be means tested on spouses earnings.

I am not in a position to answer you question with regard to medical card. Perhaps someone with more knowledge with regard to criteria for medical card can answer this.

Depending on how much was being paid, it may be more advantageous for the person working to claim the Part-time Job Incentive Scheme. There are qualifying criteria, eg the person claiming has to have been in receipt of Jobseekers for at least 15 months, and the job must be under 24 hours a week.

The Part-time scheme involves payment of 193.90 to the person in payment (this is the rate for a couple), and the full wages are kept. There are no payments for dependent children. It is payable along with FIS if you do have dependent children!

If he is earning less than about 260 Euro for his work, its probably better for the non-working adult to just claim a reduced Jobseekers payment, but if it is more than this, then look at the Part-time Scheme.

Full details of the scheme can be found here http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Publications/SW69/Documents/sw69.pdf

The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed 01 856 0088 or citizens information www.citizensinformation.ie can go over the figures with you if you are unsure which scheme is better for you.

As far as medical card is concerned, if you have been in receipt of a Jobseekers payment for 12 months or more, you can keep your medical card for three years when you start work and your income goes above the limits.

If your husband opts for the Part-time Scheme, he keeps his medical card while he's on the scheme, for a maximum of three years.
