Thoughts on Chevrolet and American cars

Wondering what the general consensus is on Chevy and American cars in general and why there are so few on the roads in Ireland. Seen this on carzone and thought it seemed like nice car, 2.0 diesel for €22K!

There's a reason they start that cheap...

Then there's also the residuals on them, which are what you'd expect from a car with a starting price of €22k for a 2L Diesel.

Whichever is sold in Ireland I suppose.

Very few places selling Chevrolet (Daewoo) cars this year. Saw that same model in Mullingar a few weeks ago. Was very tempted, but declined on the grounds of seemingly dwindling support. The Chevrolet Ireland website is not great either. Its been under construction for the past 4 months:eek:

In fairness in comparison to a 1.6 Octavia diesel they aren't actually that cheap at a glance, even a 2.0 diesel Octavia is not too much over €25K.

Considering the Chevrolet thing is dated enough at this stage they couldn't really price it any higher, the one in the link the OP posted appears to be a six speed.

I'd probably take one over a Fluence.

    Really dated looking yoke though.

Chevrolet in Europe are competing in the budget car market with their rebadged/re-engineered Daewoo or old GM products. The only thing they have in common with Chevrolet in the US is the name and same parent company.

Thing is the budget car market in Europe is way more competitive these days and the competition has moved on from just rebadging old designs. Manufacturers like Skoda, Kia, Hyundai, etc all offer superior products.

If I had one, I'd always feel like a 'Star in a Reasonable Priced Car'.

The Chevy Cruze was launched in the US in 2010 and received a favourable reception. The car was designed in Korea wih engineering design by Opel. The diesel engine is e same as Opel/Fiat/Alfa models. The Cruze is produced at about 10 factories around the world. Hard to see that it's simply a rebadged Daewoo or old GM product.

In all fairness what the American's think of as favourable has little relevance on what is competitive with rivals sold here in Europe. The overall package is lacking what their rivals are offering which is a major reason why they don't sell here imo.

... it looks a decade off the pace :) Regardless of what's under the bonnet it would be a struggle to sell one I reckon.

    Thank topgear for that anecdote.

The LS engines are used across the GM range. First used in the Corvette.

Any genuine American made car I've driven has been horrible. So a mediocre Euro/Asian designed vehicle will easily be an improvement.

Just because a lot are made doesn't make it a good, it means it knows it's market and is advertised well.

wasn't suggesting it was good, only that the knee jerk reaction that it's not a Chevrolet is wrong. I suspect it'll be the highest selling one in the US with the downsizing trend. Bizarrely it's a huge seller in Australia!

There not actually that bad lads there a 2.0 diesel with 160bhp and a decent amount of equipment for 22k not the most stylish car out there but sure what can you do. I really alot don't see the point of bashing Korean cars they're Cheap the newer ones have come on alot a far cry from the likes of the Matiz and the old Hyundai Accent and I haven't heard any horror stories about them.

I think the only thing it has going for it is that it's not a Chevy:D They can stick whatever badge onto it they want, it's still a Korean car.

I overtook a load of them on the N2 years ago and the rumble of the V8s was amazing. I suppose I should have said it was only modern hire cars I've driven.

But the old muscle cars where never designed to go around corners, in fact I don't think any American designed car is.

Anyone know why the Chevy Impala isn't sold in Ireland?

I drove one recently as a hire car in the US for two weeks. The cabin is comfortable, if plasticky. But it wobbled like crazy anytime something bigger than an F150 went past, the engine was sluggish and brakes were terrible. The boot sounded so tinny every time I closed it.

It is a decent looking mid-size, but there's no way I'd buy one. I'd bee too worried about getting squished in an accident.

I don't think it's manufactured in RHD. The new Malibu will, I think, be sold in at least some RHD markets (Aus/NZ).

Because you'd sell samples of herpes faster then you'd sell 3.6L V6 petrol American saloons in Ireland.

I agree. The 325-inch LS4 V8 is the one to have.
