'Thanks'

Don't mean this to be a serious thread at all, but just wondering has anyone noticed the typical lifetime of a thread on boards.

    It tends to go like this;

    Thread posted!
Boards members dissecting the post for sarcastic comments or making some joke trying to get as much 'thanks' as possible...
After all that, the discussion actually starts...
Then it either gets locked or lost amid the blizzard of threads posted on this forum...

What really gets up the crack of my arse is the people who only post for 'thanks' on a repetitive basis. Do they get some sort of internet erection from doing so...

Dunno, just had to put it out there...

It makes me feel good to get thanked. I have a terribly fragile ego.

I don't know whether many people post for thanks - the same kind of approach was applied before the thanks system was introduced.

Damn it Epicurus, stop looking like me and making people think I don't like thanks!

    I f**king love thanks.

Anyway, I dish out thanks to posts that are good, ie well-made points, funny jokes etc. and I imagine most people do the same.

I find it hard to believe that people deliberately look for thanks.
I wouldn't complain about funny people in real life looking for laughs.

The thanks system is over rated but sure as long as you are /we are happy with what you we post over a period ( most of the time ) then people will take note .

What's worse, thanks whoring or threads moaning about thanks whoring? The threads, at least the whores are generally funny, entertaining or informative.

I look on 'thanks' merely as a by-product of my incredibly witty posts.

i'm a bit meh about it Moo. I know what you mean, but it's easy to ignore it. and like you said things do tend to get into serious discussion pretty soon after (if that's the way it's meant to go), so ...yeah meh.

Wish this post was the first reply to the OP. Might have got loads of thanks for it.

Anyway the whole sarcastic second comment is over played. The best way to thanks whore is to post a random picture of a litter of cute kittens in a handbag

    I'm a bit confused now.
I though you'd confused the OP with me due to our then similar avatars (as I'd joked about), and were replying to his opening post but thinking he was me.

I think I'm too tired for the internet, should go to bed :(.

It's an understandable mistake: there's few people worthy of having Commander Riker as an avatar. (and even fewer still worthy of Picard :))

What really gets up the crack of my arse is the people who only post for 'thanks' on a repetitive basis.

Boards was like that before the thanks feature was ever put in

The best posters had razor sharp wit and would have fantastic posts and so they became known.
Javaboy was a good example, where is Javaboy these days?

    And there were others too

If the thanks feature was taken down right now, posting styles would not change

I think in the reverse way. I usually feel respect for people who thank me; think they must have sharp and right-thinking minds. Maybe I'm a bit arrogant.

No, people who thank your posts are great. The more recent the post the better.
