Hi all, my mother got stung with a bill for €375 on behalf of her son's stay in hospital for 5 days last week, she is on the top rate of tax, i am wondering when can she claim the tax relief ie. this year or have to wait until the year is over, and if so what is the procedure? sorry for all the questions but im clueless when it comes to these matters, many thanks!

She will have to wait until next year and submit a MED1 or claim on PAYE anytime (online) to claim the relief due (assuming shes a PAYE employee and not self employed in which case it goes on the Form 11 paper or ROS). She will only be entitled to 20% relief on the amount paid health expenses are no longer allowable at the higher rate.

In some cases Revenue will code the relief to this years credits if it can be shown that it would otherwise cause financial hardship. If your mother is a higher rate taxpayer this is unlikely to apply.

If the expense was incurred this year she will have to wait until after 31/12/12 to claim. Relief is granted at the standard rate of tax, 20%.
