i recently changed the rear drum brakes on my mk1 focus and was hoping that with the change the handbrake should be a bit tighter but it isnt, i have to pull the handbrake lever right up to get it to hold so how do I tighten it good and proper? cheers

sounds like you need to tighten the manual adjuster inside the drum. was the drum a tight fit over the brake shoes when you were putting them back on?

It's possible that you have not reassembled the automatic adjuster correctly, or as Sean has suggested you may need to bring up the adjuster manually (by screwing it) so that it is near correct and let the auto take care of the rest.

Its a ratchet type adjuster on these, just press the brakes until the clicking sounds stops, you have done this I guess. Take up the leather hand brake lever couling in the cabin and tighten the ten nut(maybe 2). Good luck.

The automatic adjuster doesn't always work properly on these. I wouldn't touch the adjustment screw at the handbrake until I had taken off the drums and made sure everything was ok in there.

Also, if there is a lip on the drum you should take it off. It will allow you to adjust up the shoes good and close without getting them stuck on the lip
