Funny thing is though, he didn't make as much of a big deal out of it when one of his photographers won the sports category 2 years ago.
He'd definitely win first prize for patting himself on the back ;)

    Some nice pics throughout.
Interesting one there of Maria the drug addict and sex worker - the mind boggles...

Some stunning images on there, but am I the only person to think the winning shot was a little....underwhelming.

I guess it's cause it looks like Michelangelo's Pieta?

Yeah I'd agree it is a little underwhelming. Its subtlety tells so much more than an image that overwhelms. Worthy winner and a very intelligent piece.

Love the rugger pic and good skills on Mr. McManus.

Am I missing something here? isn't the whole point in press photography that the photographs aren't edited?

Majority of those look like they certainly didn't come out of the camera like that?

    Maybe it's just me?

I think the winning photo is brilliant, really stops you in your tracks. I think its because you can't see her face, she's in such a familiar, loving maternal position and you're naturally drawn to her face because of that. We've all seen thousands of similar photos and the pained expression on the woman's face is usually the focal point of those photo. Here, the fact that she is veiled just takes that dynamic and turns it on its head. Makes the viewer reflect on that and the differences between themselves and the woman.

/ end "jazz club - nice" talk

The white gloves are also weird

I liked the libyan shot with the lads all running around like they were choreographed too

I think these photos are excellent although some do come across as edited! But all the same they are fantastic they help make the viewer empathise with what is happening in the photos, which is what a good photo is suppose to do.

    Yes !

try shooting film for a while - it helps you get stuff right in-camera instead of post processing (it makes you a bit of a pr1ck when it comes to setting up a pic but means you dont need to post process afterwards)
