The news channels on UPC,are we seeing only the US and uk view of the world?

Think i would have preferred to post this in the politics forum but might breach its charter?

I do not lose sleep over it and i doubt UPC have an agenda, but it does bother me when important events happen that we only seem to get one side of the argument.

other than euronews which i often find dreary(sorry i know many people love it)
we get both BBC 24 and BBC world.
sky news is uk based also.

we get CNN,CNBC and Bloomberg and even though they add either international or europe after their name they reflect the world through US eyes.

IMO Al Jazeera deserves a spot.
France 24 also.
CCTV-9 from china as an alternative view would be no harm, its standards can be surprisingly high.
NHK world should be there too imo.
Russia today(RT) is decent enough but Putin restrains it somewhat and it is used as a propaganda tool in subtle ways, sometimes.
Press TV from Iran has been taken off even the sky platform.
it was a propaganda tool but had some some decent shows reflecting the muslim point of view.
George Galloway even had a nixer on it!:)
does Germanys DW have an english language version?
if so it should be considered imo.

have i missed any you think should be considered?

any thoughts?

cheers!

I removed my answer as this question is more political.

This is a cable board.:)

Hi Ranicard, whilst i agree that people of the Jewish faith seem to box far above their weight especially in the US,your answer was not really what i was looking for, that was why i could not decide which forum to post in.

UPC customers in Ireland would know what channels they can receive but the politics forum has UPC,Sky, and international posters.
i hope you will not receive an infraction,in fact i hope the mods will take into consideration that i may have tempted you into the wrong forum by my own confusion as to were best to start the thread.

i cannot agree with your anti-zionist views however.
zionists are freedom fighters to Jews, there are few countries that do not worship some movement that in their eyes freed them.

cheers.

hopefully the topic in the OP will be addressed in a more level headed manner, but most likely it will not now.

Shame on you Ranicand for your anti-Semitic tripe. Shame on you Mods for permitting his poisonous hatred on your website.

Rubbish what I posted was 100% true about who runs those channels and their political agenda.
Remember BBC refused to broadcast the aid appeal for Palestine.

If you want to criticize the moderation, please do it via PM. We don't work full time for Boards and hence are not on here 24/7.

If Ranicand hadn't deleted his post, he would now be serving a five day ban. As it is, he can now consider himself warned that is completely unacceptable on this forum and if I see it again he will be serving a lengthly ban.

To get back on topic, I'm not sure if Deutsche Welle has an English version, but I don't see why they couldn't include the German version. Or both (if an English one does exist). The rest I agree on also.

RTVE Internacional is the only one I can think of that you didnt write.

The above channels should be extremely simple to negotiate carriage on, since they are non-commercial and their intent is to be as widely distributed as possible so I really can't understand why UPC doesn't add them.

It's not exactly as though they are running out of channel space

I am surprised that UPC don't have Al Jazeera English. Didn't it win the RTS news channel of the year only the other day?

Yes, it did. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/feb/23/al-jazeera-english-rts-news-channel

Al Jazeera and NHK are excellent news channels and would be a great addition to the lineup.

I'm not particularly keen on NHK. It feels almost like a tourist info channel for Japan at times. Al Jazeera Eng can be very enjoyable however.

I thought UPC would go to greater efforts with news channels, it's the kind of stuff that's easy to get broadcasting rights for.

I find these threads bashing one company against another rather funny.

I am not afraid to call a spade a spade Sky has a better TV service then UPC.

However you pay for Sky.

However UPC has the best broadband and calls pack.

And if you want news channel that is not part of the pack you can watch live here.http://www.presstv.ir/live/

And the UPC broadband network has the bandwidth to make it run nice and smooth.

What bashing are you referring to and in what thread? The only bashing that was in this thread so far was of supposed zionism.

I was on about general threads.

As regards my deleted post maybe I did not choose my words with wisdom.

This thread is saying that UPC does not have a great selection of news channels.

I now subscribe to Sky and the news channel that I found on that platform was removed for political reasons.

I am only pointing out it can be viewed online at this link for free http://www.presstv.ir/live.html

Or maybe you agree with censorship?

If you do it is a funny stance to take in a thread about a lack of choice and one sided views.;)

I'm not a moderator but posting about some channel or other that was on sky is not the topic here and I wasn't discussing such a topic. If you claim that UPC are being bashed in this thread, I can't see any evidence of this. The OP asks a reasonable question of what news channels UPC carries. I don't understand why you were referring to "general threads" here.

Internet news channels are as accessible from eircom etc. as they are from UPC. I'm only interested in discussing what news channels should be on the UPC EPG.

The title of this is The news channels on UPC,are we seeing only the US and uk view of the world

These are the same news channels that peddled us the Iraq WMD lie.

The link I am not posting for the 3rd time has a very different point of view.
http://www.presstv.ir/live.html

Also I am not sticking up for UPC I changed to Sky and I was happy they carried this channel until OFCOM banned it.
To get back on topic
Thank you who is this and the others whom i have thanked.

The above channels should be extremely simple to negotiate carriage on, since they are non-commercial and their intent is to be as widely distributed as possible so I really can't understand why UPC doesn't add them.

DW pulled itself from the sky platform because it considered the payment sky was asking silly(the German language version,i have not had time to find out if there is an english version.but i do not know why DW encrypted when it was on sky?
It's not exactly as though they are running out of channel space

even if they were i do not understand why one Euronews is not enough considering there is an option to set preferred language,no matter what you set it to the english speaking channels remain in english.
surely without using anymore streams they could replace the various euronews's with at least some other news channels.

my guess is UPC is seldom bothered by their customers demanding more choice in their news channels.
it is just a bit lazy by them (UPC) and the current line up is more to do with the dates the channels started and UPC got the cheapest deal available to them.
i doubt CNBC or Bloomberg would offer themselves for free!:)

Personally I'd like to see a wider choice of news channels too. Have you tried contacting UPC and registering an interest in those channels? I dont know who you'd have to speak to but maybe UPC: Jason could point you in the right direction.

Thanks JohnK, i think by his signature he is restrained from saying all he might like to say,but it is good that he is on boards.
