Importing a car from UK

I'm bringing one or maybe two cars from the UK later this year.

Both currently owned / used by me, and both will be owned / used by me in Ireland.

What's the procedure for getting them Ireland plates and tax etc? Is there a time limit? One was previously imported and VRT'd from UK to Ireland, does that make a difference?

Also, one car will spend about 40-50% of the year on UK and the rest of the time in Ireland... where should it be taxed / plated?

Where are these cars registered now?

To answer the question where should they be taxed, registered, insured you need to tell us where will you be living / where will you be resident (UK or Ireland)?

    Both UK registered now.

I will be a UK resident (working and taxed, etc) but will spend almost 1/2 year living in Ireland.

My understanding is that I can't drive a UK plated car in Ireland except on holiday or something. Not sure.

If you are not resident in Ireland, you can drive your UK registered car in Ireland without any problems.
It doesn't matter that you will be spending almost 1/2 year here.

Even better news - your insurance from UK will cover you third party for the whole period of your stay in Ireland.
Only what you might need to do is to find out how long are you allowed to drive abroad to keep your fire, theft and own car damage insurance valid.
But even without them, you are still road legal in Ireland, as your third party insurance is valid without any limits.

    Thanks for info.

Not worth the risk having 3P only... will call my insurer and see what's what.
