PayPal reversed payment

Strange one here with PayPal I'm wondering if anyone has had similar happen.

I've got a few low priced items for sale on eBay as buyitnow. I got an email this evening saying I had a payment received for one of them. Just as I was going to package it up I logged into my PayPal by chance and noticed the payment had been reversed, within the space of about 5 minutes although I never got any email from PayPal telling me it had been reversed?

I popped them off an email and they replied telling me to contact the buyer and ask them to send the payment again, but when I go into my ebay account I can't find the actual transaction

I've never had a fee reversal nor ever had a dispute against me on eBay or PayPal so I'm wondering if this could have been a scam of sorts or is it possible to reverse a payment without opening a dispute?

You're not alone - It happened here yesterday too , a payment made by a lady called Sarah.

This is what Paypal said :
PayPal reversed this payment because of a dispute or payment review. The money has been returned to the sender's PayPal account.

We have no idea why this happened either , but think it may be due to lack of funds in the buyers account .

But if there was a lack of funds in the buyers account, surely they wouldn't be able to pay in the first place?

I've never heard of this before, seems odd to me OP, I'd be wary of selling to the buy now even if they pay a second time.

What if you had posted the item, would you get the money back? Cos I doubt you'd get the item back.

We rang Paypal to clarify , and they said that a reversal happens when the computer '' times out ''

Paypal said that there is nothing untoward in this , and suggests contacting the buyer to see if they wish to try completing sale again .

happened me too and I was told this from paypal:

"I checked your account and it shows that your payments for x have been reversed on 9 February 2012.

Please be informed that this is a normal functionality on eBay. If a buyer completes a transaction on eBay checkout flow and haven't received a confirmation that the payments was successfully sent in a minute or so, the transaction will be reversed automatically.

This happens due to the bulk of transactions occurring on eBay every second. As you can see, the transaction was reversed on the same date and you can compare the difference of second/time when the payment was received then reversed on your account.

In this case, please contact your buyer and ask him to complete the transaction again on eBay. Once he received a confirmation that the payment was sent successfully, then the amount will be available on your PayPal account.

I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

Please let me know if you require further assistance.

    Thank you for choosing PayPal."

Did either of you guys get an email informing you that the payment had been reversed? Its good to know why it happened but usually once I have a confirmation email in my inbox I just take the address from that and then post.

Had I not logged into PayPal I would have just sent the item and most likely have been out of pocket for the cost of it and left chasing the buyer to pay.

    Speak of the devil!
I was just packing some stuff to pop in the post in the morning and happened to log into PayPal and I've another reversed charge from today and no email to let me know.

I wonder is there a problem with either eBay or PayPal at the moment as its never happened me in the past number f years I've been using both of them.

I'll have to give PayPal a buzz and see if they shed any more light On it.

We have had a lady that has paid 3 times ( yes THREE times ) and in all cases the payment has been reversed .

Paypal must be the problem .

More payments reversed today - Rang Paypal again , and they now say that the problem is at the eBay checkout .

Paypal said that the eBay technical team are working on it , but are unable to give a date that the problem will be fixed .

I will now ring eBay for confirmation that they are the problem .

Same thing happened to me this evening. I was buying from a UK ebay seller.

They emailed me to say that ebay have acknowledged problems with buy it nows redirected from Ireland and had suggested to the seller to change the need for immediate payment...

I don't have a paypal account. So, it does look like an ebay problem.

The seller said that ebay reckons it will take up to 7 days to fix the problem!
