    Hi all,

Is it true they have stopped making these? Anyone know what replaced them? Need to get me an acoustic, and am considering a Takamine, but no idea what to get. I was told to get a Jap made one if at all possible.
I like the smaller bodies, but so many options, I am at a loss!

How long is a piece of string? Whats your budget? What sort of stuff do you like to play?

Not sure if they are still making them or not but there are a few second hand ones on Adverts.ie . Takamine guitars in general I like, even the cheaper G series sound ok.

Acoustic guitar choice is a very personal thing, most people love Taylor guitars, I know one guy who hates them. Some people swear by Yamaha but I have never picked up a Yamaha acoustic that I would like to bring home no mater what the price. I have never picked up a Martin that I didnt want to bring home:)
Ill give you the standard line when choosing an acoustic, try as many as you can within your budget, forget about name (unless your interested in resale value) and pick the one that sounds/feels the best to you.

I would rule out the G series, and would like to get something around the 1000e mark if new, but would go second hand.

Yeah, Martin's are nice, but Taks are good workhorses for live use, which I would be doing with it regularly...

Saying that, you're right, even within a set budget, there are so many options, but I would narrow it down to the tried and trusted for a start....

Don't discount the lesser known brands. I have a 600 euro craftine that i picked over guitars costing much more , all solid woods, lovely neck. Check out seagul guitars too. Lovely guitar, sound great, nice headstock design too and nicely priced. Try em all

Seagulls are great. I only ever got to play 2, and they were great, one was a cheapo one. It's trying to get my hands on one to try it is the problem.
I wouldn't like to buy an acoustic unseen/off the net without playing it.
Martins, from what I played are good, but I won't discount others.

My experience of guitars around the 1000 mark are some Takamines, Tanglewoods and Martins, and I played some lower end Seagulls.

Does anywhere in Ireland stock seagulls?

I also like the smaller bodies, not jumbo, or dreadnought, but would not rule out a dreadnought if it came to it...

    Yo,

My mate picked up a seagull in the music shop in maynooth, think it's called k'n'b music, think they stock them, if that's any use.

His guitar is lovely, think it is a low to midrange instrument, but plays and sounds great.

i have an EN10c. it's beat up to ****, but, still sounds great. it's from 1994 i think. if you can find one second hand it's probably a good buy.
i've never liked the newer G taks

    Hi there,
I'll be honest I have a bias toward takamine, but i've the following to say. Martins are great guitars, as are taylors-great action and beautiful tone, again pricey. Seagulls, i was amazed at the price for the quality-I've been to KnB music in maynooth and they stock a small but high quality amount of semi acoustics from martins, taylors to takamines-oh and btw, members of the music soc in NUIM get 10 pc discount in the shop so if you've a mate there-get him to buy it for you. anyway back to where i was...yeah - this is all well and good if you're playing to yourself in a bedroom(i learned on my dad's big baby taylor-which is now in bits!!), but I think you're talking about live. A guitar on it's own sounds a world of a difference plugged in especially when it comes to acoustic. I'm first to say that Takamine, apart from the really expensive cool tube preamp, no longer reign king when it comes to amplification in their latest guitars. This is NOT to say to avoid them, simply turn back the clock a bit. Yeah the en10's are no longer produced as are alotta their best guitars-its almost like they try to hide their best stuff. I'm very familiar with takamine's semi acoustic range circa 90's, including the en10-which is basically the an10 with a preamp.there's always some bangin around, check ebay- I spent a couple of years hunting a particular model whic is pretty rare, and kinda hidden- takamine dont even have it listed on their discontinued page on the website-the NP-15, ended up with the cutaway version, now 21 years old and sounds f'n amazing plugged in or not. I'd agree that you gotta play the guitar before you choose it, but having said that its about self satisfaction so if its a particular model such as the en10 that youve set your heart on then dont be afraid to buy online, ebay offer buyer protection via paypal. Alternatively check out the etn10c, ive played it and its v similar to the en10- there's one in music maker, wexford st. in dublin(jus off grafton)-top floor in the acoustic room at the end.also check out the takamine g10 v similar to en10 aswel Oh and if you're gonna buy takamine make sure its JAPAN, these are the 'high end' as everyone calls em, but really the everything apart from these is like a takamine replica-i.e. a waste of money. I spent half your budget to get my dream guitar-had to compromise with the cutaway, but it took time, so be prepared to wait, keep looking, ebay, adverts, even general google search for the guitar your looking for and I can almost assure you one'll pop up within the next few months. It'll save you buying new, expensive when the older one's are just as good if not better!, also takamine may not sound the most beautiful but there's something about them, they're workhorses, and love being abused i guess, check glen hansards NP-15 out if you dont believe me!-his still sounds unbelievable after busking with it for a century!!
    keep searching-it'll pop up
    best of luck
