What exactly do you mean when you say 'claim for excessive kilometres'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Was the milege not taken into account at the time?

Maybe a better way to ask is: what is the time limit for disputing/appealing a VRT payment?

Why thank you but i taught the question was plain enough..Would 5 years be to late to have any chance of some reimbursement? It actually cost him over €5000 to bring the car in back then and he never heard of the excess kilometer claim until i mentioned it to him today.Times were good back 5 years ago i suppose.Nice genuine guy and some cash back would really help his cause at this time..

That link is not working. In any case, the mileage was always taken into account when the VRO calculated VRT on a car - what makes you think it wasn't in this case?

Actually my comment was meant in such a way as to try to help you get your answer as most people seemed to only want to ask silly questions or offer no help. I was on my mobile and that was the best I could do.

However now that I am in front of a PC and have 30 seconds to spare I found the following by applying the science of google-ology

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/vrt-appeals.html
Your appeal should be forwarded, together with all relevant supporting documentation, to the appropriate Appeals Officer (see below). Please note that you have 2 months within which to make your appeal.

    8.3.6. Ascertain the mileage
The odometer should be read to establish the mileage. An average monthly mileage of 1,300 miles for diesel vehicles and 900 miles for all other vehicle types is taken as the standard. For every additional 1,000 miles in excess of this average that the vehicle has travelled, an additional credit of €77.00 will be allowed up to a maximum credit which is the lesser of €1,270 or 10% of the value of the vehicle.

    8.3.7. Calculate the VRT
Having established the variables, the VRT due on the vehicle is calculated based on the OMSP and depreciation rates for the particular make, model, version and variant, adjusted to reflect the extras, condition and mileage for each individual vehicle presented for registration.

Mileage is one of the factors used in the calculation of VRT due on an imported car. The OP seems to feel that the mileage on their friends car was somehow not taken into account when the car was imported in 2007, and wants to know whether this can be appealed now.:)

I thought that but you must give the mileage when the car is being cleared. Also I have found that a car with low mileage is the same as the one with high mileage..

Yes, I didnt know this either and almost every car I imported would have been eligible.. is this a new thing?
The PDF linked basically says the VRT calc only factors mileage upto 64k km, any reductions for high mileage depreciation beyond that is on a scale that must be applied for separately!

I never heard about this till last week (was another thread here).
    Ascertain the Kilometerage
The odometer should be read to establish the distance travelled. An average monthly kilometerage of 2,100Km for diesel vehicles and 1,500 km for all other vehicle types is taken as the standard. For every additional 1,600 Km in excess of this average that the vehicle has travelled, an additional credit will be allowed depending on the age of the vehicle in accordance with the following tables. However, where the kilometerage excess is greater than 64,000Km, the VRT reduction for any additional kilometerage must be claimed by the individual using the Excess Kilometer Claim Form, (see Appendix 3), the claim supported by documentation demonstrating that the kilometerage is valid. Where a vehicle is more than 4 years old this documentation must include kilometerage recorded at the most recent Periodic Technical Inspection and a vehicle service report or invoice from a garage and where the vehicle is less than 4 years old, the kilometerage recorded on at least two vehicle service reports or invoices from the garage.

The maximum credit allowed will continue to be limited to 10% of the value of the vehicle.

PS: Kilometerage is a stupid word IMO.

The pdf document is dated december 2011. I imported a car in late 08 with 120k kms on it. That would be a substansial discount..
